9 Tricks To Prevent Your Sheets From Slipping Off The Bed

At best, bed sheets that don't stay in place are annoying. They disrupt your wind-down time with a book or iPad as you're continually forced to jump out of bed to pull the sheet corner back up. Plus, making the bed in the morning feels like even more of a chore when you have to wrestle your linens back on. At worst, slippery bed sheets can disrupt your sleep. A tangled mess of linens is uncomfortable and can contribute to waking up throughout the night. Luckily, fixing this problem isn't too difficult. To help keep your linens in place, we've rounded up a few tricks to prevent your sheets from sliding off the bed.

You can use many of these hacks on your current bed sheets. But if you're in the market for new ones, set yourself up for success by buying ones that have a strong elastic and that are deep enough. They should fit both your mattress and your protector, if you have one. Sometimes, that's not enough though, especially if you tend to toss and turn throughout the night. Some sheets just don't want to stay in place, and that's when it's time to try these tricks. Here are some affordable and effective ways to keep your bedding secure all through the night.

Use bed suspenders

Can suspenders be used to keep a fitted sheet from slipping off the bed? You bet! Just like suspenders keep trousers in place, bed suspenders keep your fitted bed sheet snug. They clip onto the corners of a fitted sheet and provide that extra bit of tension to keep them secure. The tension also reduces wrinkles, which is a win-win! An option like the Gorilla Grip Bed Sheet Straps costs $11.99 on Amazon for a four-pack (one strap for each corner). Since they just clip onto the corners, this type of bed suspender is suitable for beds of all sizes, from twin to California King. They're easy to install, too — you just clip them onto each corner.

Or use a full-on fitted sheet strap

An alternative to bed suspenders is a long bed sheet strap that reaches all the way across the bottom of the mattress. With an example like the Siaomo Bed Sheet Holder Straps, which cost $7.99 on Amazon, this alternative can be cheaper and more secure. The design does a good job holding the fitted sheet in place, but even better, it holds it more tautly, which means there are fewer wrinkles. The drawback? It takes more work to install since you have to pull the strap across the bottom side of a heavy mattress.

Try a bed scrunchie

Are you not overly interested in lifting your mattress every time you have to put on your sheets?  Even if lifting the corners seems like too much work for you, the bed scrunchie might be a better match for your needs. It does the same thing as the previous hacks — keeps your bedding in place — except you clip it onto the sheets prior to putting them on the mattress. You make the sheet on the bed like you normally would with the gadget attached, pulling the drawstring tight to secure the linen in place. However, this product is a bit pricier — it comes in at $44.95 on Amazon.

A large strap will also do the trick

If you want to keep more than just your fitted sheet in place, choose a large strap that goes all around the sides of the mattress. This option will cinch your duvet and blankets in place, guaranteeing you won't kick them off in the middle of the night. It is very easy to install and there are a few options. The Rubber Hugger Bed Sheets Holder costs $16.99 on Amazon and is essentially a large elastic band that stretches around the mattress to keep sheets in place. The QoeCyth Sheet Fastener costs $8.99 on Amazon and is also a large band, but it has a clasp so it can be easier for some people to put on and take off.

Add Velcro dots for a bit of stick

A few Velcro dots can do the trick to keep your sheets in place. VELCRO Brand Dots cost $6.77 on Amazon, so this is an affordable solution. However, there are a few caveats to this trick. If the Velcro dots come apart, the scratchy side will be exposed, which can be uncomfortable to the touch. Because of this, this trick is best suited for sheets you don't come in direct contact with. For example, use it to keep your top sheet and duvet together. Most Velcro dots also have an adhesive backing, which likely won't hold up to washing. You can hand sew a few stitches to keep the Velcro securely in place.

Sew an extra strap to fitted sheets

This DIY project from @ellenbobellenn shows how to make sheet straps that are attached to your fitted sheet. This setup takes more work at the outset, but then you won't need to clip on the straps each time you change your sheets, which is necessary with bed suspenders or sheet straps. This video shows the process of attaching the extra straps with a sewing machine, but you can hand-sew them as well. Since it's hidden underneath the bed, it's alright if your stitches are a little wonky!

Tuck flat sheets securely to keep them in place

Looking for a hack that won't cost you any money? This video from @belledorm shows a simple way to fold perfect hospital corners. This folding method not only makes a bed look nice, but also keeps sheets firmly in place. It's similar to a hotel bed tuck — and if you've ever struggled to pull back the sheets in a hotel room, you know just how secure a well-made bed feels. If you struggle with the fitted sheet popping off at the foot of your bed, adding a well-tucked flat sheet might help since it adds an extra layer of security.

Or use a pool noodle

You can make your bed using one genius pool noodle hack. This trick works in beds that have a footboard with enough space to tuck a pool noodle between the footboard and mattress. Make your bed as usual, then squeeze the pool accessory in the empty space. It fills the area and adds tension to the sheets to keep them in place. Pool noodle a tad too big? You can try cutting it in half lengthwise using a serrated knife.

Invest in zipper sheets

If your bed sheets seem to come off no matter what you do, it might be time to invest in zippered sheets. These wrap all around the mattress and zip closed, similar to a mattress encasement. It's pretty much impossible for them to slip off during the night. The downside? They're pricier. The set seen in this video is the EaZy SheetZ Fitted Sheet and costs $149.99 on Amazon for a queen-size fitted sheet. It does include two top sheet sections though, which is essentially like having two fitted sheets. If you make the switch to zippered sheets, repurpose your old bed sheets into something new, like drop cloths or plant protection.
