Create Rustic Wall Planters With A Simple Dollar Tree DIY From TikTok
The rustic style is all the rage right now, and if you want to add some more simple greenery to your home, you can DIY an adorable home decor item out of Dollar Tree items. On TikTok, Marla W (@mwahl89_) posted a video showing how a few things from Dollar Tree can be used to make gorgeous, rustic planters for a few bucks. With some craft wood, glue, jute cord, and a little paint from the low cost retailer, you can create cute, rectangular planters to hang on your wall. This project will most likely also require some sandpaper and a staple gun, which you probably won't be able to find at your local Dollar Tree. If you prefer a different look, you could also use a plastic planter and a craft wood plank instead.
Several of these planters could be made and placed side by side on your wall, or you might stagger them or line them up diagonally. Because these planters are made primarily of craft wood, they won't be the best for holding real houseplants. Instead, you can fill them with faux plants like the artificial greenery bushes at Dollar Tree, where many items are $1.25. With this simple project, you can create a rustic planter on a budget.
Creating Dollar Tree rustic wall planters
To start, decide on the size of your planters. For a shorter version, try the 7-inch long craft wood blocks, or for a larger planter you could use the 11-inch MDF plank. If you prefer the look of square planters, the MDF wood squares are a great choice. For each of the planters, you'll need one of these boards and some thinner planks, like the 2x18 inch craft wood planks. You may need a few of these and they will likely need to be cut to fit along three sides of your larger board. Now, you can simply glue the sides to the piece of wood with wood glue, hot glue, or even super glue. The bigger plank will act as the front of your planter, while the thinner ones make up the two sides and the bottom and the back is open.
To make your wooden box match other rustic decor pieces, apply a layer of black paint and use a paper towel or cloth to smear it. This will create a look similar to a wood stain, but for a fraction of the cost. You might also consider using brown paint, or lightly sanding the wood after the paint dries for a more distressed appearance. To hang your planters, staple some jute cord horizontally and taught along the back of them, about an inch down from the top. Finally, suspend this string on a nail or tack on your wall.
Alternative DIY Dollar Tree wall planter
If you want something a bit more unique than the boxy version of this rustic planter, you can attach part of a plastic plant pot to your wooden board for a different take on this DIY. First, you'll need to choose a pot that will fit on your plank. Dollar Tree's glossy round planters would be a good option, as well as the large round planters, depending on the size of your board. Use a marker to draw a line around half of the pot and cut along it. Also sand the edges to ensure it will fit flat against your plank. Now, you'll have two half planters that can be painted however you like. If you want them to match the rest of the space, consider choosing one of these rustic paint shades that you'll want in your home. Before attaching your plastic pot to your board, paint or stain it however you'd like and let it dry. Finally, glue your plastic pot to the bottom of your wooden plank.
Once you've finished crafting these rustic planters, you'll need to hang them. At Hobby Lobby, you can find sawtooth picture hangers with nails for just under $3. Command strips (about $4 for four pairs on Amazon) are a better option if you're renting or don't want to put holes in your wall. Once you've hung your rustic planters, fill them with faux greenery and flowers that complement your space.
