DIY Cute Boho Ghostly Decor Lights Using Toilet Paper And Aluminum Foil

If you're partial to decorating your home in a bohemian style, you're in luck, because sustainable boho decor is a trend that's here to stay. What better way to get in on that than with a fun, easy DIY just in time for Halloween? These ghost lights can be made just with materials from around the house. Using just toilet paper, PVA glue, and aluminum foil balls placed on toothpicks, you can make your own bohemian ghost string lights.

First things first, following this DIY video from @bohemiandecor on Instagram, find something that you can use as a platform to insert toothpicks into. That could be a piece of foam, an egg carton ... really anything porous and sturdy will do. The key is that they need to be upright. Roll strips of aluminum foil into small balls, about the size of a golf ball, and stick them on the top of the toothpicks like lollipops. Next up is the fun part. Mix some PVA glue with water in a bowl (the ratio should be double the water), then place a sheet of toilet paper into the mixture. Remove it fairly quickly so that the paper doesn't disintegrate, then place it over one of the aluminum foil balls. Repeat the process until all your foil balls have been covered, and leave them to dry.

Once everything has hardened, you'll be left with several papier mâché ghosts. Remove the toothpick and aluminum foil ball, and for the full effect, use a black marker to draw two eyes. Out of all the ways to give your home a trendy boho-chic makeover for Halloween, there's no doubt that this is one of the easiest!

The right lights are important for this boho Halloween hack

So, you've got a selection of little ghosts: now it's time to thread your fairy lights through them. This part is super simple, as all you'll need to do is make a small hole on either side of your ghost with a skewer (or even one of your toothpicks) and slide the string through. Not so fast, though — the exact kind of lights you use for this particular craft are important.

Tissue and toilet paper are known to burn easily, which means having this particular craft around anything that produces too much heat is risky. That doesn't mean you have to skip it, though. Just make sure the lights you choose are LED and don't radiate heat. Walmart sells 12 packs of these for under $9, but you can also head to your nearest party or lighting store and ask for a recommendation. Either way, test the lights before stringing them through. If you're noticing them getting hot, don't risk it, but if they aren't emitting any heat, go right ahead and update those ordinary string lights with your ghost crafts. Just switch them off when you leave the room, to be extra safe.

If you're satisfied that the lights you're using won't pose any risk, it's time to string up those boho ghosts wherever you'd like to see them. Ghosts with a bohemian, whimsical touch. Extra candy for anyone who cracks a "boo-ho" joke on Halloween night.
