The Popular Paint Hack That Jeremiah Brent Says No To

DIY paint hacks frequently float around the internet, so you may be tempted to give them a try at times. It can be difficult to determine which hacks will actually help simplify the painting process, though. You need to ensure that the tips you come across online will not damage surfaces or result in streaky or poor-quality final results. It's best to rely on the guidance of experts to decide which hacks to move forward with. Luckily, HGTV star Jeremiah Brent shared his opinion on a popular paint hack that you might be familiar with. During an interview with 1stDibs, which was shared on Instagram, the reality TV star revealed that he isn't a fan of the trend of using a sock to complete painting projects.

"On TikTok, people are painting with socks," the star said when asked about the painting method that has been making its rounds on social media. "So that's a no thank you from me." Although Brent did not specify exactly why he doesn't recommend using a sock in place of a paint brush, many of the problems with this method are obvious. A sock is unlikely to result in an even finish on many surfaces. Additionally, socks are not made out of a material designed to be used for painting. This means that fabric fibers may stick to the surfaces you paint and result in an unintentionally textured end result. You may want to stick with traditional painting tools to avoid these problems.

Painting with a sock may result in an uneven finish

Just as Brent mentioned, many TikTok users have shared videos documenting their experiences painting with socks. Some have painted furniture using this method, while others completed entire walls. User @tishaaragon shared a TikTok showing how she painted across a wall using a sock in place of a paintbrush. This painting method resulted in a watercolor-like design. Many viewers did not like the end result. "I tried to trust the process ..." one user penned in the comment section of the video. You will notice that the painted wall is blotchy. Although this is intentional in this case, using a sock to paint might not be the best idea if this isn't your end goal. If you want a solid, streak-free result, consider sticking with traditional painting tools.

One tip for painting your home like a professional is to use the same materials as the experts, such as brushes and rollers. These tools will produce even coats of paint as long as you use them properly. It is important to know when it is most appropriate to use each of these items before getting started. Paint brushes are ideal for smaller projects or in areas where you need to paint precisely, such as in tight corners or near outlets. Alternately, paint rollers are great for covering large spaces. If you need to paint walls in a room, for example, select a paint roller.
