Hilary Farr Loves This Earthy Dining Table So Much, She Got One For Her Own Home

"Tough Love with Hilary Farr" fans may remember that in a Season 1 episode, the host made a point of recommending a live-edge table to a couple. However, Farr wasn't just talking the talk in that particular situation. Far from suggesting something she wouldn't have in her own home, Farr has since gushed over her very own live-edge dining table.

As Farr told her clients, live-edge furniture lets the wood used in a piece shine through. "That is the natural edge of the tree that provided the material for this table," the HGTV star explained. Given how passionate Farr is about eco-friendly home decor, it totally makes sense that she was impressed by it or that she decided to get one for herself. Taking to Instagram just under a year later, Farr shared a snap of her live-edge dining room table and noted that she'd fallen in love with it.

Live-edge tables are increasing in popularity, so if you're also a fan, it's more than possible to try this out in your own home. This particular furniture type can be brought into your home in a bunch of different ways — you can even DIY your own, if you're up for it.

If ready-made live-edge furniture is too costly, make your own

If you're in the market for some new furniture and are as enamored with live-edge furniture as Hilary Farr is, now would be a great time to take a look at what's available. Amazon has a ton of options. Granted, they are on the pricey side (we're talking more than $1000 for most dining room tables). The same goes with Crate & Barrel: gorgeous, but with a big price tag. Of course, there are other options out there, and it's never a bad idea to take a look at Facebook Marketplace, local furniture stores, and estate sales to see what's available.

With that said, another option would be to make your own. As demonstrated by YouTuber HomeMadeModern, doing so can be fairly simple. All you'll need to do is source a piece of soft wood (HomeMadeModern opted for cedar), smooth it down with an angle grinder, and sand it. From there, you'll need to secure some legs (you can get a set on Amazon for under $140), wipe everything down, and apply a finish. Maker Brand Co. sells a finish with sealer for $42.

If woodwork isn't already something you're comfortable with, going the DIY route might be a little too ambitious. Even so, this is certainly a woodwork project even beginners can do, and if you are up for the challenge, there's no question that it'll save you a ton of money.

You can use live-edge furniture throughout your home

Whether you're opting for store-bought or homemade live-edge furniture, the great thing is you're not limited to just a dining table. On the contrary, you can use live-edge furniture to add a rustic touch throughout your home. From floating shelves, to vanities and coffee tables, live-edge furniture is the perfect add-on for anyone with a penchant for bringing the outdoors in. And, if you are planning on buying the furniture rather than making it, doing so would undoubtedly make things more cost-effective. After all, while live-edge dining tables regularly retail for over $1000, Amazon sells live-edge coffee tables are available for around $160.

Given that Hilary Farr had used a live-edge coffee table to sell her clients on the idea on "Tough Love with Hillary Farr," there's no doubt that she'd approve of just about any live-edge accents in a house. With that in mind, opt for the version that best suits your budget and abilities. No need for tough love, here!
