Hilary Farr's Kitchen Drawer Design Makes Storage & Organization Simply Effortless
Do you feel like no matter how many times you organize your kitchen drawers, they still get overwhelmed and wildly disorganized within just a few days? Whether your kitchen has three drawers or 20, it can often feel like it's never enough, even after you've thoroughly decluttered your kitchen. That's in part because even with plenty of and large enough drawers, we just lob items into them, with no real regard for how they'll stack up. But Hilary Farr of HGTV's "Love It or List It" shows us that this chaotic system doesn't have to be inevitable with a super smart solution: add a pegboard and pegs to the bottom of your kitchen drawers.
In a reveal on an episode of "Love It or List It," Farr showed off a stunning deep drawer outfitted with peg board holes and removable pegs. The pegs work as drawer dividers and stands, perfect for holding lids, food storage containers, plates, pans, utensils, and more, instead of throwing them into a heap. And just like a vertical pegboard, this drawer style is totally customizable, which means you can configure it in different patterns to accommodate different kitchen items as needed. This drawer system is one of the best ways to get your kitchen perfectly organized.
How to get pegboard drawers
Hoping to recreate this look in your home and finally have a drawer system that isn't totally overwhelming? The good news is that pegboard setups are very easy to obtain. The ones Hilary Farr shows off to her happy homeowners appear to be custom, and you can certainly go that direction if you have the time, budget, and patience. But if you don't, you still have plenty of options. You can buy pegboard drawer inserts from many home retailers, including IKEA and Walmart. They're available in several materials such as wood and plastic, and many cost under $20. Just check the dimensions of your drawers and find a compatible size.
You can also opt for a DIY method by drilling holes into a board of scrap wood or particle board, and buying compatible pegs from the hardware store of your choice. If you have a pegboard taking up space in the garage, you could simply cut it to the size of a drawer.
Why choose pegboards over other drawer organizers
There are hundreds of products on the market that promise to solve the over-crowded and unorganized kitchen drawer problem, so why are pegboards the key to your organizing needs? The biggest benefit is the dimensional flexibility. With other drawer dividers and dish stands, you are limited to a specific size and configuration. If a stand is produced with wide slots, it will be great for holding large kitchen items such as saucepans, frying pans, and bowls, but thinner items such as lids and plates will topple over. With removable pegs, you can make the divisions as wide or narrow as needed.
Similarly, let's say you have a stand that covers up two-thirds of the drawer area. You're then left with a third of the space unoptimized, which means it will become a magnet for disorderliness. Pegboards can cover the full surface of the bottom of a drawer, so you're less likely to have wasted space.
We also love the pegboard system because it is adaptable. A major reason that drawer organization systems fail is that our needs change over time — we buy a new frying pan, we get rid of our old plates, we find that missing lid for that food container. With traditional organizers, you'd have to reset the whole system to account for these changes, but with pegboards, you just reshuffle the pegs to fit your needs.
