Try This DIY For A Stylish Way To Store Toilet Paper In Any Bathroom
Many people struggle to store extra necessities in their bathrooms, particularly when they're on the smaller side, and oftentimes backup toilet paper rolls end up cluttering the top of the toilet tank or stashed in a cabinet that's hard to reach when you really need them. Luckily, with just a little bit of fabric, you can create a stylish hanging toilet paper holder that will not only act as a place to store your extra rolls but also as a stylish bathroom decoration. This genius toilet paper storage solution will allow you to keep one, two, or as many rolls as you'd like next to the toilet and is super customizable to boot.
You can use any style of fabric, whether it's patterned or a solid color, to create the holder and either fabric, ribbon, or cord to hang it up. You can also attach some ribbon between the sections or along the outside to make it even prettier. This would be a great project for using up scraps of fabric that are lying around from other jobs or a smart way to repurpose old curtains.
With thinner fabrics, consider ironing interfacing, like the Pellon fusible interfacing, which is $1 per yard from Joann Fabrics, on the inside of the material to help your holder keep its shape. Additionally, this organizer can be sewn together or you can use fabric or hot glue if you're not sewing machine savvy. Either way, the chicest toilet paper storage solution is at your fingertips.
Starting your DIY toilet paper storage holder
The first step to crafting your adorable hanging toilet paper organizer is to pick the perfect fabric. If you don't have any scraps lying around, consider some sweet flower patterns like the Ditsy floral and vines purple quilt fabric ($4 per yard at Joann Fabrics) or a simpler color like the Sew classic solid cotton ($5 per yard at Joann Fabrics). Before cutting your material, first, decide how many toilet paper rolls you want the holder to store and how you'd ideally like to hang it. This will determine how much fabric you'll require for the job as well as the design of the hanging straps themselves.
Your straps could be closed loops, which you then slip over a towel bar or command hooks ($4 on Amazon) to hang the holder, or you could leave them open so that you can easily tie your storage piece to your current toilet paper holder. You'll also need to measure the circumference of your rolls. This is important, as different brands will have different sizes and this step will ultimately determine the width of your fabric too. Next, lay out however many rolls you need to store with about an inch between each and measure. The length of your fabric should be double this measurement. Cut two strips to these dimensions, and two smaller ones if you plan to use the same material for your hangers.
Assembling your stylish toilet paper holder
Next, sew the two longer strips together inside out, leaving one short end open. Cut any excess fabric from the corners, flip the project to the right side, and sew the opening on the end closed. If you're gluing, fold down about ¼ inch of each side of the fabric and seal to create a seam before attaching the pieces, right side out. Then, make the two straps by folding your small strips lengthwise and sewing or gluing them securely.
Fold each strap in half so that the ends are side by side, before folding your holder itself in half too so that the hangers are between the two ends, and finally sew them together. With glue, you should attach the ends of the holder before securing your hangers. This will create a large fabric loop with two little loops at the top for your straps. For open hangers that can be tied together, let the ends of your small straps hang out instead.
Finally, insert one roll of toilet paper into the bottom of the holder and sew across the fabric above it. Continue doing this for every roll your holder will store, creating a little pocket for each one. Now, your DIY space-saving toilet paper holder can be hung up against a wall in your bathroom or tied right below the holder beside the toilet so that it's always within reach.
