Turn Empty Egg Cartons Into A Beautiful Spring Wreath You'd Never Know Was A DIY
A spring wreath can be a beautiful add-on to your front door as temperatures warm up, but there's no need to run out and buy one. Using empty egg cartons, you can make your own at a fraction of the cost. Aside from the egg cartons, you'll need a wreath form, fabric in colors that make you think of spring, and a glue gun.
This hack works by using the empty egg cartons to create little flowers, which you'll secure to the fabric-covered wreath form. That said, the flowers are really the hero of this craft, so if you have a ton of extra egg cartons lying around from pre-Easter egg dyeing and you'd prefer not to add on the fabric, you can create a wreath filled with just DIY blooms.
You can also customize the egg cartons however you prefer, with different paint colors that align with the rest of your home decor. It's also nice to remember that this is a way to upcycle. With this craft, you're not just creating something sweet for the home or finding a fun activity to do with your loved ones ahead of the Easter holidays — you're also doing something to reduce waste.
Start by building your egg carton flowers
To create flowers out of egg cartons, open the box, and snip off the tips of the raised pyramids that divide the eggs from one another. Once you've done that, cut out each individual egg holder. You should be left with individual cups, with some sides in a V-shape. Cut out those V-shapes, and you'll be left with a very basic, four-petaled flower. Use scissors to shape each of the "petals" accordingly and repeat the process with another cup. Then, using a hot glue gun, secure one inside the other, with the petals covering up the empty spaces. Finally, flip the tiny cones you'd snipped off at the start of the process upside down, and use hot glue to secure them to the center. Repeat until you have enough blooms to turn your porch into the perfect spring space.
For color, you have a few options. One is to use acrylic paint (Amazon stocks sets of eight pastels for around $25) to paint each component separately before sticking them together. Another option is to use a pastel-hued spray paint which you can apply after everything has been stuck together.
That said, at around $7 for a can at Walmart, it's worth mentioning that using spray paint can get very pricy. So, if you are thinking of going this route and want to keep costs down, limit it to two or three colors.
Secure the egg carton flowers to your wreath
Once you have your flowers made, it's time to secure them to your wreath form. Amazon stocks 12-inch options for just under $10. Helpfully, they're made of straw and look like baskets. So, if you're hanging your wreath as part of your Easter home decor, you may want to leave it as is and stick the egg carton flowers onto the wreath form directly.
If you'd prefer to add some fabric to yours, one YouTuber recommends getting a yard of fabric. Amazon stocks a variety of spring floral fabrics at around $10, and if you look around, you may even be able to find something that matches perfectly with the flowers you've made. As for attaching it to the wreath, the YouTuber cut one yard of fabric into three strips and secured it to her 12-inch wreath form with a glue gun.
When you're happy with the finished product, all that's left to do is hang it up. Using your wreath hanger you usually use at Christmas time, or a new, invisible one from Amazon for $5.99, attach it to your door, window, or wherever you need a dose of spring. Not bad for a repurposed egg container, right?
