Choosing tile for your kitchen can be a difficult process, especially if you're not sure what would be considered trendy but timeless — and what would be a passing fad. If you're thinking of renovating your kitchen, though, maybe it's time to skip the conventional tile materials and patterns to opt for something that stands out, will last, and yet is still trendy. The styles that are hottest this year are slim subway tile designs and boho-inspired zellige tiles. As for colors, it's a toss-up between outdoors-inspired shades, earthy tones, and, perhaps surprisingly, all-white color schemes.

First up, zellige tile. Originally from Morocco, this tile type is characterized by its glossy look and the fact it will reflect light magnificently. They don't adhere to a particular pattern, color, or style — you can configure them in any way you want, meaning they're a good choice if you don't have a specific tile look in mind. Plus, as they have natural texture, zellige tiles are an excellent way to lend a rustic look to a space. 

That said, if you're not sure about zellige tile, subway tile is a classic alternative. It has been around a while, but there's something about the design that has major staying power. If you're unfamiliar with subway tile, it is named after the tile you see in well, the New York City subway. Often crafted from ceramic, their neat, geometric look is timeless. Subway tile comes in many sizes, but the style that's on trend now is an extended subway tile that has a slim and long appearance. You can also configure subway tiles in various ways, but, if you're looking to do something a little out of the ordinary, we recommend a herringbone or zigzag pattern.

If you're more interested in colors than specific types of tile, it looks like this year is all about outdoor shades and earth tones. Colors that fall under this category include anything from beige to brown. Though any outdoor shades are on trend, green tile in straight-from-the-forest hues is also having a major moment by itself right now. If you're opting for brighter tiles, we recommend pairing them with an otherwise neutral kitchen, or you can opt for brighter colors on the walls if your tiles fit into the neutral category. Though you don't have to do this, it will create a more visually balanced look. 

Not a fan of pops of color? As mentioned, all white is another tile trend that will remain timeless. However, it may be more difficult to maintain and keep looking good if your kitchen is a busy space. A kitchen decorated in a completely white color scheme could look a little impersonal, so we recommend adding in another color elsewhere, even if it's a neutral.
