Not only do these enhancements elevate your living experience, but they also have the potential to increase your home's value, making such renovations a smart investment. If you're looking for a charming add-on to your backyard that doesn't break the bank and fits most backyard sizes, why not consider building the DIY swing set that has become popular on TikTok for its cozy, homey feel?
TikTok user @eastcostdiy made this now-TikTok-viral DIY swing set after the city she was in made her remove the pergola installed over their garage due to a lack of engineered plans for it. Given that she had the materials, she decided to use them to DIY a swing in their backyard. She got this swing idea from @aspenackley, who also DIYed their hanging egg chair fire pit, which consists of two egg chairs hanging on a pergola beside the DIY fire pit in their yard.
How to make a DIY swing set in your backyard
To begin building your backyard swing, you'll need a few materials: beams and planks, two hanging egg chairs (which you can find on Amazon for around $125.95 each), concrete, primer, and paint. Start by digging two post holes about 4 feet deep and spaced around 10 feet apart, or to your desired pergola length. Insert the posts into the holes, make sure they're in their proper place, and secure them with concrete.
Connect the posts by affixing two 2x8-foot planks on each side of the top beam, screwing them firmly in place. For added stability, reinforce the structure by placing two 6x6-foot blocks between the beams, ensuring they're evenly spaced from the sides and each other, and screw them securely. Finally, attach an eye bolt to each block — you'll hang your egg chair swings from the bolts. For enhanced stability, consider adding corner bracing using 6x6-foot blocks. For the pergola's top, cut multiple 2x4s into 16-inch lengths, similar to what @aspenackley did. Arrange these evenly across the top of the two beams and securely screw them in place. This addition provides structural support and contributes to the pergola's aesthetic appeal. Prime and paint the pergola to your desired color and attach the hanging egg chairs.
