How Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Gives A White Kitchen A Pop Of Personality

The white kitchen is a point of contention for many designers and homeowners. Each year, as we discuss new and outdated design trends, the white kitchen is always up for debate. As the go-to color since the 1920s, proponents argue that white is a timeless kitchen option that never truly goes out of style. In recent years, designers have put their own spins on the white kitchen, adding pops of color and bits of life through small but meaningful changes. For example, in one episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," a dark kitchen was turned white to make the space feel bigger — but for an added touch, the designers added bright blue appliances for a much-needed pop of color.

That little bit of blue went a long way. Keeping the cabinets and countertops white opened up an otherwise small kitchen space, and the colored appliances made the kitchen feel special and unique to the home.

Adding color to your kitchen with appliances

In this 2020 episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," designers used Big Chill appliances to turn an all-white kitchen into a unique space. Big Chill is known for its style and mechanics — their appliances not only look gorgeous but also have advanced cooling technology. But the hefty price tag — such as the $7,000 it cost for the bright blue fridge used in the show — is likely out of most budgets.

If you want to get the same look for your kitchen, but can't stomach the hefty price tag, consider other options. This mint green gas range from Lowes (for $1,699) gives the home a retro look without feeling outdated. Plus, the matching fridge, also from Lowes (for $1,499) helps complete the entire look. If you want something a bit richer, we love this navy blue range from AJ Madison for $2,506 and this pop-of-red retro refrigerator from Williams Sonoma for $3,699.95.

Other ways to get a pop of color in your kitchen

While switching out your appliances for some of the above options is a surefire way to add personality to your kitchen, it is not always the most attainable. Appliances cost a good amount of money, and if you already have sturdy, reliable appliances, you may not want to replace them. But never fear, there are other ways to add that pop of personality to your all-white kitchen. Jenn Todryk of "No Demo Reno," who says white kitchens are not going anywhere, recommends adding small brown touches or greenery for instant warmth. HGTV's Jenny Marrs says a clever trick for adding contrast to a white kitchen is using black hardware.

If you want to do a bit more, consider painting your island a contrasting color or having fun with your backsplash by incorporating unique designs or color choices. You can also update your floors — a dark wood will add contrast to your white kitchen, giving it more life. Add bold, oversized light fixtures for a finishing touch.
