TikTok's Organization Method That Can Turn Your Home Into A Tidy Paradise

Sometimes, life gets in the way and you find yourself surrounded by clutter even when you try to keep your living space neat and tidy. Whether you've attempted to clear out many a time or don't know where to start, decluttering your home isn't as simple as it seems at first glance. However, the following method, coined by @kayleenkellyorganize, could make a major difference to your space. You have probably heard of (and perhaps even tried) Marie Kondo's KonMari method, which takes a more straightforward approach to keeping things based on whether they "spark joy." If that didn't work for you, this method could be far more beneficial. As described by the creator of this method, the four steps are "clear out," "categorize," "cut out," and "contain." By utilizing these steps, you're likely to find that you find cleaning up a space much more doable than when you first began.

The first step, "clear out," is the biggest and most time-consuming part of this method, but it's well worth hanging in there for the results. This step is the time for you to move everything that either doesn't belong in the space it's in (for example, a pile of clothes in the bathroom) or that needs to be thrown away (like broken toys). Note that this is not the step to get rid of things — you're simply moving things to the space they belong in, like clothes in the closet.

The next step, "categorize," is when you can start to make a little sense of things. You don't have to go in-depth (save this for step three), but this is the time to put tops with other tops, jeans in a pile of jeans, etc. You can use storage boxes to keep things organized, or simply fold and put your clothes away together. It might also be nice to ensure all of the clothes going back into your closet and drawers are clean by doing laundry loads before beginning step two, though this isn't required.

Get ready to cut out and then contain

Step three, aka "cut out," is the trickiest one and may take the longest if you're indecisive. Now everything has been sorted into categories, you should be able to clearly see the items you have. Whether you're sorting clothes, makeup, toys, or a bit of everything, think clearly (but not too hard) about what you can give away or sell. Though this isn't officially in the method, if you're not sure about whether you want to throw something out, put it to one side to assess after you have finished clearing out everything else. It can feel overwhelming trying to make decisions about so many items, and you may regret throwing something away later. However, it's important not to dwell so you don't talk yourself back into keeping something that needs to go.

The final step is "contain." If you still have a lot of items left, it's important to be mindful of not cluttering up the containers or spaces where you are putting things. Otherwise, you're back to square one. Put items from the categories you created earlier where they belong until everything has been tidied away.
