TikTok's IKEA TJENA Toy Storage Hack Is Perfect For Legos

Lego sets and pieces are a mixed blessing. They can entertain little ones for hours on hours of building and design but they can also get everywhere, including underfoot painfully in the middle of the night. Finding a functional, but stylish, storage solution for LEGOs is a must for an organized play area. Options abound, including bold and colorful plastic LEGO brand storage boxes and pricey stackable bins from Pottery Barn, but one TikTok user, @interiorundco, may have a more stylish and budget-friendly approach with a charming DIY look. By taking one of IKEA's popular TJENA storage boxes and adding a few cute and inexpensive details with glue, she creates a perfect place to stash legos and an adorable decor element fit for any kids' room play area.

TJENA boxes are one of IKEA's most inexpensive storage solutions, coming in at under $6 per box. Measuring 9 ¾ x 13 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches, they are large enough to hold a lot, but small enough to be stashed away easily. They are made of 100% recycled paperboard and assemble easily by folding together. @interiroundco adds some inexpensive cork coasters with a glue gun to the lid spaced to resemble the blocks themselves, and some decorative letters on the side to spell out "LEGO."

Creating a custom LEGO box

Because the TJENA boxes are inexpensive, you can use them to store entire sets easily and in one place, which will help keep your LEGO collection better organized and tame your playroom storage. They also look stylish when placed on a bureau or shelf, particularly if your playroom has a more neutral-driven vibe overall. If you want to make the boxes more stackable-friendly, use flat coasters instead of raised ones that will allow the boxes to be stacked more evenly on a floor or surface.

These LEGO boxes are not only a more aesthetic alternative to some other LEGO storage systems but are made from recycled paperboard instead of plastic, which won't be lingering around quite as long as the toys they contain. The surface is great for customizing and adding decorative accents to as well, including the foam letters, stencils, scrapbooking doo-dads, and/or drawing with fun markers. Decorating and customizing these LEGO boxes can also be a fun rainy-day activity for kids.
