Add A Pop Of Lighting To Any Room With This Pinterest-Approved Hanging Sconce DIY

Adding cute and stylish lighting to any space is important. Even better if it can be done for pennies with upcycled materials. Pinterest, which is full of great ideas for DIY wall sconces, recently harbored a perfect suggestion for using old jars in an earth-friendly, functional, and chic way. A tutorial at the Mason Jars Crafts Blog includes some great suggestions for creating wall sconces from salvaged wood, pipe clamps, and mason jars that are just the solution for adding additional ambient light to any space and a bit of rustic charm. 

To create the sconces, you will need clean jars, a length of wood in your desired size, one pipe clamp for each jar, and some screws. You will also need access to a drill bit to create a hole for a screw in the metal pipe camp. The tutorial creates a version of the sconce that lines three jars up at equal distances on a board horizontally, but you can also create single versions using smaller lengths of wood and a single jar. 

Begin by cleaning and preparing the wood, which you can leave natural for a rustic look, or sand and paint your desired shade. Drill a single hole in the center of the metal pipe clamp, which will allow you to screw the clamp to the board. Once the clamp is attached, slip the rim of the jar into the clamp and adjust it to hold the jar aloft. To add illumination, you can use all manner of battery-operated lights, including small puck lights, faux votive candles, or twinkle lights. You can also use the sconces to hold traditional candles or tea lights.  

Use a long board with many jars on a large wall like along a stairwell or in a hallway. Or hang multiple jars vertically along the wood for a more slender space. Use single jar sconces on either side of a mantle or doorway. You can also make a slightly more romantic-looking variation using a screw-in hook and some chain or jute twine to hang the jar from the wood. Not only great for lights, the DIY also works to create a row of vases or storage jars that would look perfect in a kitchen or bathroom holding small items. These DIY jar sconces or holders are the perfect addition to rustic décor or industrial spaces.
