The Design Feature That Will Instantly Elevate Your Bedroom, According To Our Interior Design Expert

If you have been wondering about the best way to upgrade your bedroom from a space you only use for sleeping to one you'll love to spend time in, we've got you covered. Speaking exclusively to House Digest, Artem Kropovinsky, interior design expert and founder of award-winning, New York-based interior design studio Arsight, revealed his top tip for how to take your bedroom to the next level — and it involves looking up.

"The impact of a statement ceiling in the bedroom is remarkable," Kropovinsky shared. "Consider bold paint colors or different wallpapers to enrich depth and create character." Statement ceilings have been having a moment for a while now. From elaborate ornate designs to simple painted styles, it seems that making something of your ceiling is on the up (literally). It may sound a little weird at first, but a statement ceiling is a great way to maximize design space, especially if you have a lower ceiling and shorter walls. Per Kropovinsky, "The ceiling is an important piece for the design of a bedroom that gives you a showcase to add some personal flair and creativity."

Give your bedroom a fresh and creative new look

Not quite convinced? There are heaps of ways to make the trend work for your space. Artem Kropovinsky told House Digest a couple of the easiest ways to incorporate a statement ceiling into your bedroom. "Consider using a different color (but one that complements the color on your walls) when painting the ceiling, or make use of removable wallpaper for an effortless and effective transformation," the design expert shared.

With a statement ceiling, you can get infinitely creative. If you have a bedroom that gets lots of natural light, painting the ceiling in a dark and moody hue like navy blue or forest green will bring a sense of calm. Alternatively, if you're a fan of bright colors, a blue ceiling like the one pictured above will feel bold and refreshing without giving you a headache when it's time to go to bed. As for wallpaper, Kropovinsky's tip to opt for a removable kind is especially useful for situations if you like to change up your decor often.

This design trend doesn't involve breaking the bank

You also don't need to worry about this being a disruptive upgrade. In his exclusive interview, Artem Kropovinsky told House Digest that several ceiling designs can be done without the help of a professional. "A lot of updates to ceilings are Do-It-Yourself friendly, particularly in the instance of painting," he stated, adding, "Highly advanced designs might require a professional assistance."

Moreover, if you're conscious of how expensive decorating your ceiling could be, you may be surprised at how budget-friendly it can be. "Painting comes in all price ranges — even penny pinchers can spend less than $100," Kropovinsky explained. "Wallpaper or plasterwork can be a costly indulgence, and so, as an alternative, why not resort to stencils."

As a final piece of advice, Kropovinsky said to look at the bigger picture when choosing how to decorate your ceiling. "Remember the way [the ceiling design] fits with other components of design in the room," the interior design expert advised. This is key for creating a space that works — a painted or wallpapered ceiling can tie a room together brilliantly, but not if it doesn't look good with the existing decor. An easy way to keep things cohesive is to pick out one or two colors that already exist in the room and incorporate them into the ceiling design.
