Don't Make This Storage Mistake Unless You Want A Garage Full Of Spiders

Nobody wants to have an area in their home that's full of spiders. Whether it's a bedroom, living room, kitchen, or garage, those pesky critters need to be prevented from feeling too comfortable. Unfortunately, many homeowners make a big mistake in their garage, specifically, that practically invites spiders to come in and make themselves at home.

The mistake? Keeping open storage boxes and tools lying around. Spiders love to hide in dark, cluttered, and quiet spaces that give them shelter from extreme temperatures and wet conditions. They also love their solitude and want to be somewhere they can stay for a while and lay their eggs. When you keep open storage boxes in your garage, spiders can come right in and get situated inside of them.

Since they're unlikely to be disturbed in these boxes, spiders will feel comfortable staying indefinitely. If you keep too many open storage boxes in your garage, then don't be surprised if you find quite a few unwelcome visitors the next time you decide to grab something that you've stored. Spiders are also attracted to clutter and will be more than happy to reside on or in any tools or equipment that you have lying around as well. Be sure to check tools before bringing them inside to ensure that they're spider-free.

Revamping the storage in your garage is the way to prevent spiders

To prevent spiders from feeling too comfortable and making a home out of your garage, rethink the way you approach garage storage. Instead of keeping open boxes or containers around, make the switch to airtight containers instead. Spiders have a hard time gaining access to airtight containers, and in the off chance that they do make their way in, they won't have enough air to breathe. Although spiders don't actively breathe in the way that humans do, they need oxygen to survive and won't last long in a container that's tightly sealed.

It's also essential to think about the material of the boxes you store in your garage as well. Keeping cardboard boxes in your garage is a big no-no if you want to prevent spiders from getting comfortable. Spiders tend to love cardboard because it absorbs moisture and attracts other insects — these insects serve as a great food source for them. Stick to plastic containers instead to eliminate spiders or consider using vacuum-sealed plastic bags as an alternative.

Other ways to deter pesky spiders

If you're trying to prevent spiders from entering your garage, take a multifaceted approach. In addition to storing your items in airtight containers, remember to organize your garage well and keep it generally free from clutter. Don't leave too many items such as tools and other belongings lying around, but ensure that almost everything is kept in an airtight container. Keep all areas of your garage clean and eliminate dust and debris as much as you can.

Remember that spiders are attracted to insects, so do everything you can to get rid of them as well. Spiders need a food source to survive and if your garage is full of insects then it will seem like a great place for them to live. To get rid of insects in your garage, keep it free from food and crumbs, eliminate cracks in the walls where insects can enter, and consider using commercial insecticide or other solutions to repel bugs naturally.

Switching light bulbs in your garage can also help eliminate insects and deter spiders. Consider switching out white bulbs in your garage to yellow light bulbs instead. Since insects aren't as attracted to yellow light, fewer of them will enter your garage and this means that fewer spiders will enter your garage as well.
