Take Your Bathroom From Builder-Grade To Custom-Made With TikTok's Shiplap DIY
Giving your bathroom a refresh with a new paint job and upgraded materials doesn't have to cost you a lot of money. There are multiple ways to cut the cost of your bathroom remodel. DIYing is possibly the best way to ensure you don't exceed your budget when renovating a room in your home. You have control over what materials you want to purchase so that they stay within your budget. If you want to spruce up your bathroom, TikTok has the perfect DIY to make it look custom-made. TikTok creator @thegibbyhome transformed her mundane beige interior private bathroom into a stunning farmhouse chic interior with shiplap and a new coat of paint.
The DIY is perfect for any sized bathroom, whether you have a half bathroom or a full bathroom. The TikToker used the shiplap to create a striking teal accent wall with floating shelves and bathroom essentials to create a chic, textured interior. You'll need a few materials: shiplap from Home Depot, teal paint or your choice of paint, a sander, an electric saw, which you can buy from Walmart for $32.88, a nail gun that costs $22.99 at Harbor Freight, and paint rollers, which Walmart sells a kit for $4.88. When buying the shiplap, you can choose between a couple of options, such as the six-pack kit for $32.48 or individual planks for $10.74 at Home Depot. Pick a shiplap that will fit your space and budget.
Adding the shiplap to your bathroom
Depending on how large your bathroom is will determine how much shiplap you need. So, always measure the wall you will use to attach the shiplap to ensure you have the right amount before buying it. TikTok user @thegibbyhome used the backside of the shiplap with thin sections to give her bathroom a textured look, but you can use whichever side you prefer. Once you gather your materials, prep your bathroom by painting the non-accent walls with your color choice. While they're drying, sand down the wood planks, then paint them. Painting them beforehand makes them easier to install behind the toilet so that you don't have to remove it.
Next, attach each plank to the wall, starting from one end and working towards the other. Each plank has a tongue along the side that snaps into place with the plank's groove next to it. However, secure the planks in place with your nail gun. Once you reach the end, you'll need to remove the groove with your saw, or else it won't slide into place with the adjacent wall in the way. Removing the groove allows you to push the plank into the wall. Then, you can nail the last plank into place. After you attach all your shiplap, touch up the holes with more paint, and you're done. Now, you can install shelving and bathroom décor to finalize the interior.
Ways to elevate your new bathroom
TikTok creator @thegibbyhome DIYed thick block floating shelves that took up space in the middle of the accent wall. The wood finish added contrast and more texture to the bathroom. Plus, they made the perfect holders for hand towels, candles, mason jars, and other small décor instead of setting up a corner table that wouldn't fit inside or make it look cluttered. You can easily DIY floating shelves with file trays and other materials from Dollar Tree or use wood boards for a natural look. Of course, if you're replicating this DIY in a full-sized bathroom instead of a half bathroom, you'll have more space to include an entire over-the-toilet shelving unit or a side table to hold a few essentials. However, if you have multiple drawers and cabinets around your sink vanity, you can use the shelves to hold décor like plants, picture frames, or cute bathroom quotes.
On the other hand, make other upgrades around the bathroom. Older bathrooms need a refresh everywhere, and if you're updating the interior, you'll want to update the door. Paint the bathroom door or add molding with a few wood scraps for a detailed look. It will give it a modern look from the outside, but when you step inside, the ambiance will change. Further, swap out the doorknob with new hardware to make everything feel brand-new. Your local hardware store will have many styles and finishes to rummage through to fit your space.
