Give Any Room A Sleek And Modern Upgrade With This Chic Bedframe DIY
A wood bed frame can class up any bedroom, but purchasing one can cause quite a bit of sticker shock. If you love something mid-century like this option from West Elm or a sleek, sustainable frame like this one from Silk and Snow but can't stomach the over $1,000 price tag, consider creating a bedframe yourself. This TikTok hack shows how using wooden pallets can create a beautiful frame, plus more DIY options for your bed that you can build right now.
Hannah Valdovinos on TikTok shows how she created a similar, low-profile wooden bedframe on her own, spending only $125 doing so. The first step in the video is to cut wood slats to size. Once you have your wood cut to your liking — make sure you know what size mattress (i.e. twin, queen, or king) you are hoping to fit in the frame — you can start assembling it. The end result is so spot on that one commenter even said they liked it better than her inspiration. Here's how to do it.
How to create the DIY wooden bedframe
Once you have your wood pieces cut to size, the first step is to create the bulk of the frame. To do this, Hannah Valdovinos says to create a base in the shape of a box on each side. She uses 2x6s on the bottom and 2x10s on the top that create a pocket that gives the bed that floating look platform beds have, and then adds a 2x6 on each side of the box to keep it sturdy and able to stand on its own without support. From there, attach the four sides using nails and a drill before adding your slats, which should be about 1x2 in dimension.
Ensure your slats are sturdy before adding your mattress on top, and viola! You have a gorgeous low-profile wood bed for just a hair over $100. The hardest part of this DIY is making sure all your wood is cut to size — make the process even easier by heading to Home Depot or your local hardware store to have them cut the wood for you.
How to customize this DIY
There isn't much customization happening in the TikTok DIY — a classic wooden bed frame is truly beautiful on its own. But if you want to add a bit of color to your space or spice up the DIY, there are a few things you can do. You can paint the wood white, like shown in this TikTok, to give it a more farmhouse look or stain the wood darker or lighter, depending on your taste. But don't be scared of color — painting the wood a bright color can instantly revive a space and make your DIY bed frame look uber expensive.
If you are DIY-ed out after putting the frame together, consider adding some little touches to it. To give it a more rustic look, you can add market lights or even put mini sconces on each side if you created a headboard. This can work double-duty as a design element and a bedside light for reading or winding down at night.
