Our Interior Design Expert Weighs In On The Most Timeless Choices You Can Make With Your Countertops

Whether you're choosing countertops for a new build or redesigning your space, picking a material that will stand the test of time and create a lasting, stylish aesthetic is key. With so many different countertop options on the market, it can be overwhelming to find one that will hold up and continue to elevate your home, but during an exclusive House Digest interview, expert Raf Michalowski revealed the best materials to choose from. According to Michalowski, founder of Meble Furniture and an interior designer, "Marble and granite both stand out as the most timeless countertop materials." These can be found in dwellings of every size, shape, and style, and they fit seamlessly into any decor scheme.

Across the decades, people have used both granite and marble countertops to enhance their rooms, and Michalowski attributes the use of these to their lasting effects. He notes that "the key to their longevity is their natural and classic appearance. [It] never goes out of style."

How to elevate your countertops

When it comes to implementing marble or granite countertops, there are several factors to consider. Design and finish are important to accenting and complementing these materials, which is why during an exclusive interview with House Digest, Raf Michalowski shared his thoughts on both materials to help readers get the most out of their choice. "The beveled edge is my favorite for both marble and granite," he explained when asked his thoughts about trim, edging, and design. "You see, it adds a touch of elegance without being too elaborate. It's a subtle detail that can make all the difference."

Flat edges might be a popular choice for those who lean toward modern and minimalist themes, but these could fade from the spotlight as new trends emerge. Beveled edges will enhance the granite and marble, both of which are considered luxurious materials deserving of elegant accents. Michalowski also recommends opting for a honed finish, which "adds an understated, sophisticated touch to the countertop and avoids any potential reflections and scratches that may occur with a polished finish."

Countertop materials to avoid

If your budget doesn't allow for granite or marble countertops, you can still get a timeless result with a more wallet-friendly option. Marble counters can cost anywhere between $75 to $250 per square foot, while granite costs around $40 to $100 for the same, making it slightly more affordable. However, interior designer Raf Michalowski noted during the House Digest exclusive that quartz can work just as well as these materials, and comes with a much more ideal price tag. He suggested looking for quartz countertops that "mimic the look of marble or granite, as they offer a similar timeless appeal in terms of aesthetics."

Quartz starts at about $50 per square foot, but it can go up to $200 per square foot so it's best to shop around for the best deals if you're trying to maintain a certain price point. Michalowski warns against being tempted by cheaper materials like laminate. "It may be tempting due to its low cost, but in the long run, it won't provide the same timeless quality and durability that marble or granite offer," he explains when asked what options to steer clear of when it comes to countertops. While it may be an investment, your counters are a huge part of your home's interior, and a timeless design will continue to make it feel inviting and stylish.
