The Umbrella Hack You'll Want To Know Before Cleaning That Hanging Light Fixture
A dramatic hanging light fixture will not only brighten your space but also add a touch of decadent luxury. However, stylish statement light fixtures tend to accumulate dust and dirt over time — not to mention the elaborate cobwebs spun by industrious spiders. While cleaning your chandelier and other lighting will help you restore the fixture's shine, you'll have to spend extra time and effort to pluck the dust and dirt that floats down to the furniture and decor items below. So, hook an umbrella underneath the next time you clean a dirty hanging light fixture.
The umbrella hack shared by TikTok user @hopetoshop shows her hooking a U-shaped umbrella from one of the metal rods in her chandelier. She proceeds to spray clean her chandelier while the umbrella does a stellar job of catching the runoff. You can replicate this hack in your home and even use it when cleaning ceiling fans. All you need is an umbrella with a J-shaped handle. In case you don't have one handy, you can buy an automatic compact umbrella from Amazon for under $12.
How to use the umbrella hack
Before you begin, switch off the bulbs in your hanging light fixture. Now, let the bulbs cool down before opening the umbrella, turning it upside down, and hooking the J part on one of the metal rods. Be gentle, as you don't want to knock out a bulb with the handle accidentally. Try to hook it around the center of the light fixture (or fan) to create an effective barrier and minimize your cleanup efforts afterward.
Now, use your trusty Swiffer (or a blow dryer in a low-heat setting) to get rid of the accumulated dust, dirt, and cobwebs. The umbrella will catch it all. If you like to use a liquid solution for a more thorough cleanup, this hack is perfect to catch all errant drops of the solution, too. After you're done cleaning, pluck off the handle carefully and dispose of the gathered dust and debris into the garbage. Next, clean the umbrella thoroughly and let it air dry completely before packing it away. In case you're superstitious and believe that unfolding your umbrella inside your home will usher in bad luck, you can cover the furniture and other furnishings with a newspaper or old cloth instead.
