The Unique Light Feature You Can Create With Leftover Plastic Kitchen Utensils

When you move into a new place, the light fixtures aren't always the most stylish décor piece. However, if you don't want to buy a new fixture, you can create a unique light fixture with plastic kitchen utensils. Having a box full of leftover plastic spoons can take up space in your closet, and instead of throwing them out, use them to transform a plastic container into an eclectic lamp. We've had our fair share of DIYing unique lamps with items we have at home, such as cute DIY square paper lamps. Making your own light feature with things you already own is an excellent way to incorporate décor you don't typically see at retail stores. Plus, you save a lot of money instead of purchasing expensive, trendy pieces.

The spoon lamp DIY comes from TikTok user @veeeries, who used a plastic container, plastic spoons, hot glue, and an LED light. The result is a creative light fixture that is perfect to display on a nightstand or any end table and hung from the ceiling to illuminate focus areas. Most of the materials can be found in your home, but if you don't have them, you can purchase them at Dollar Tree for less than $8. If you find yourself with bags of leftover plastic spoons and plastic containers you never use, you can make a multitude of spoon lamps to customize differently and make an excellent statement piece in every room.

DIYing your plastic spoon lamp

You'll need plastic spoons, scissors, a hot glue gun, a utility knife, a 32 oz plastic food container, a bowl, and a light bulb with a cable. If you don't have a light bulb and cable at home, Walmart has a pendant cable for $5 and light bulbs for $1.94. Gather your materials and set them up at your craft station. Cut each spoon's head, leaving them with a bit of a tail. After you cut all the spoons, place them in your bowl and set them aside. Grab your 32 oz container and cut a hole in the bottom big enough to fit your light bulb perfectly.

Once the hole is cut, set aside your light bulb and glue the spoons to the container. This is where you can create a unique design however you want. For instance, glue the spoon heads next to each other horizontally around the container. Then, glue a layer of spoon heads slightly below the first and continue adding layers until you reach the bottom of the container. Or, instead of covering the entire container with spoons, leave a gap in the middle and hot glue the spoon handles for contrast. Create a funky design you'll enjoy seeing every day. After gluing the spoons, insert the bulb and cable through the hole and hang it in your room. You can swap the cable for a round battery-operated puck light ($5 at Walmart) and place it on a nightstand.

Customize your lamp

Even though the lamp is made of plastic materials, there are ways to make it look less plastic by customizing it. For instance, when you're done gluing the spoons to the container, take it further by bejeweling the spoons. Add rhinestones in various colors, or keep it simple with silver. The light bulb will make the rhinestones shine brighter in the room. You can buy gemstones at a low price from Joanns, Michaels, or Walmart. If you don't like bedazzled décor but enjoy colorful pieces, opt for tiny mosaic tiles. Amazon sells 500 grams of multi-shaped and colorful mosaic tiles for $16.99, so you can use them for multiple DIY projects.

On the other hand, if you'd rather have something more straightforward, use a fun, colorful light bulb, such as red, green, blue, purple, etc., to give the illusion that the spoons are painted when lit. However, you can also paint each spoon before or after gluing them to the container to give your space a pop of color. Choose a funky checkered design by picking two colors and alternating the colors as you paint every spoon. There are myriad ways to give your spoon lamp a cool design. Think of things and colors that inspire you and lift your spirits.
