Create A Custom Lamp With This DIY Using Ping-Pong Balls

We are all aware that finding a suitable house or apartment is just the first step when you're getting a place to stay, and the real challenge comes with interior decoration. Designing your home with curated pieces isn't a walk in the park if you don't have the finances to back up your extravagant taste. The good thing is that one fancy piece can transform the whole look of a room, and you don't need to break the bank to get it. By following in the footsteps of TikTok DIY interior decorator @diy_for_house, you can craft a luxurious-looking lamp that will bring "oohs" and "ahhs" with every visit. The gag is that this lampstand is made of stacked rings of ping-pong balls sprayed with metallic paint. A light source and a cute lampshade on top seal the deal for the perfect, elegant addition to your interior.

A ping-pong ball lamp may not sound like the sophisticated work of art you were hoping for, but the key here is to trust the process. While most similar-looking luxury lamps can retail from just under $100 to a few hundred, you'll only be spending money on the balls, some glue, and spray paint. That's a great bargain and a helpful alternative to shelling out all that money.

Set up the DIY custom lamp to fit your aesthetic

If you're looking for a decor item that will upgrade the quality of your living or bedroom, then you're just a few dozen ping-pong balls away from your goal. TikTok creator @diy_for_house used almost five dozen balls to bring her lamp to life. You can get a 20-pack for $8 from Amazon as well as epoxy glue for $7 if you don't already have a hot glue gun at home. Snag a $13 bottle of metallic spray paint from Amazon for that expensive finished glow, and you're good to go for the lampstand.

Glue the balls to each other to form circles of about seven balls each. Then, glue each of these circles on top of one another to form a spiraling chain. Attach a stand for the light source to sit on at the top of the rings; @diy_for_house used the cap from the spray paint can. Finally, spray-paint the entire piece.

If you don't already have a light source, you can get a pack of three battery-operated LED touch lights at Lowe's for $15. Don't forget to select the right lampshade for your custom lamp for the ultimate cherry on top of your design. Stick the adhesive light onto the cap, and place the lampshade over it until balanced. Now, you have a decorative lamp that will trick anyone into inflating your net worth by a few zeroes.

Stay safe during customization

This isn't a one-stop design for your lamp. It's going to have to fit in your space, so you've got to make it work by customizing it. For something shorter, reduce the number of ping-pong ball rings you stack on each other. If you want to use this design for a taller floor lamp, simply buy more balls and add more rings. You can even change the shape of the rings to whatever fits best.

If you have a lamp fixture you want to revamp by adding the ping-pong ball rings, just measure the diameter of your lamp stand and make sure the rings can fit around it. One thing you should keep in mind, though, is that although your custom lamp may look amazing and save you some major coin, there are some precautions you should take when using it on a lamp. There is always the possibility of the structure melting or catching fire due to the heat generated by a lightbulb.

If you are using a 60-watt incandescent lightbulb, this hack may not be for you, as it can reach up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit on its surface. Ping-pong balls are made of flammable  plastic and melt at around 185 degrees. LED lights are designed to be cool to the touch and are a better option, but there is always the risk of overheating. You can also coat the balls with heat-resistant spray paint for just $7 at Lowe's. With the proper precautions, you can have an upscale lamp for your home.
