Use This Joanna Gaines-Approved Houseplant To Add A Pop Of Greenery To Any Space

Including houseplants in your interior design can have a huge benefit — Joanna Gaines, designer extraordinaire, agrees. Gaines shared the houseplants she uses in her own home on Instagram and one plant in particular instantly caught our eye. The Dragon Tail — more scientifically known as the Epipremnum pinnatum — is a gorgeous green plant that grows into three sections as it matures, mirroring its namesake: a dragon's tail.

Not only can the right greenery create a lovely piece of decor, but houseplants have also been shown to benefit our health by elevating our moods and improving our air quality. Keep in mind that there are a ton of ways to add houseplants to your home whether you create an entire wall or simply place a few potted plants on empty surfaces.

But with so many different types of plants out there, it can be hard to figure out the right one for your circumstances. The Dragon Tail plant is native to Australia, but in the States, it is generally found inside homes. Here's why this plant may be your new go-to decor item and what to consider before placing it on your entryway table.

How to design your home using the Dragon Tail plant

According to the Queensland Government, the Dragon Tail plant has heart-shaped leaves, most of which are entirely green, but some have specks of cream as well. The simple design of the plant makes it easy to incorporate just about anywhere in your home. Joanna Gaines shows in her Instagram that she prefers to keep her plants on a bench placed behind her couch, but you can get creative as to where you place your Dragon Tail. In nature, Dragon Tails are found on the floor of the forest, so while they thrive in sunny places, they do not appreciate direct sunlight. A spot in your living room that is more interior (i.e. not up against a window) is a great option, but your kitchen counter or your entryway table are also great spaces to consider.

As for styling the plant, Gaines uses a grey-ish pot for her Dragon Tail, which contrasts nicely against the bright green leaves. If you want a similar vibe for your plant, plenty of options are available within the range of $30 to $40 at major retailers. If your home is more modern, you may want to consider something like a simple black pot to keep with your design theme; a simple white pot could also do the trick if you're in the market for something brighter.

How to care for your Dragon Tail

Once you find the perfect spot and pot for the Dragon Tail, caring for the plant is actually quite easy. According to Love the Garden, you'll want to use a fertilizer specific to indoor plants to help it grow, and wipe the leaves occasionally to keep dust and grime off.

If you tend to forget to water your plants, the Dragon Tail is also a great choice. In fact, a once-a-week water should be just enough to keep it growing during the warmer months, while in the winter, you can water it even less. Otherwise, the Dragon Tail is an independent plant that will grow on its own with just a bit of love and attention. By choosing the right pot and the right space, your Dragon Tail can be just what your home needs to level up the design, without worrying too much about care and maintenance.
