HGTV Just Solved Our Biggest Problem With The Dyson Vacuum

Dyson vacuums have such a great reputation and loyal fan base that people happily spend $300 to $450 for one of their battery-operated stick vacuums. They get great reviews, but one complaint that keeps cropping up is that, for certain models, you have to keep the power button held down for the vacuum to run. A few companies have come up with gadgets to allow you to lock the switch in the on position, but thanks to HGTV's Instagram post, we've found the solution in the REEYEAR Power Button On/Off Control Clamp ($9.99 on Amazon) ... at least for right-handed people. There are actually a number of designs offered to solve the problem, but the REEYEAR model has the most elegant design and, by far, the best reviews.

This little wonder works for Dyson models V6, V7, V8, V10, V11, and V15. Like all the competing designs, it attaches to the vacuum near the power switch and provides an alternate way to engage and lock the switch, then unlock it when you're done. Unlike many competitors, though, the REEYEAR clamp preserves your ability to operate the switch normally. You can depress the trigger as usual to power the vacuum only while you're holding the switch or use the REEYEAR's little lever to lock the power on. It even matches the Dyson vacuum color scheme!

Installing and using the switch clamp for Dyson vacuums

Like most of the products designed to fix this issue, the REEYEAR attaches to the lower trigger guard just under the power switch. The guard might function to protect the switch from being accidentally triggered or perhaps to protect it from damage on that side. The REEYEAR clamp doesn't interfere with either function. Slide the clamp on and stop when it's snug. It's held on by friction.

The REEYEAR clamp operates by giving you a little lever to activate the normal power switch by pulling it backward toward you. The clamp rotates into place in such a way that it stays put until you manually move the lever back to the off position. After sliding it onto your vacuum, test it to be sure everything is working properly, and if so, you're done! If the lever doesn't turn on the vacuum, slide it further back toward the original switch. Then you're done, and it really was that simple.

Getting the most from your trigger lock

There are a couple of potential issues to be on the lookout for. The switch clamp is designed for right-handed people to operate with their thumbs, and some left-handed find it awkward to use. Its placement makes it difficult to operate with the left hand, and while operating it, you might occasionally trip the switch accidentally with your index finger. Not much can be done about this other than to adjust your grip or vacuum right-handed.

Some users have found that because it's held on with friction, the REEYEAR clamp loosens over time. In this case, the lever might stop turning the vacuum on, and eventually, the clip might fall off altogether. Some users have suggested using double-sided tape to hold the clamp in place. You might also have some luck with a removable adhesive. Don't use anything permanent, though, because judging from the number of replacement triggers available on Amazon, you might eventually need to repair yours, which might be difficult with the trigger lock glued in place.

YouTuber @Vacuumtester contacted Dyson in the Netherlands and was told the triggering mechanism is very natural, like when you operate a drill. And @Vacuumtester adds that it might have some advantages in terms of battery life and safety when clearing a jam. Of course, the REEYEAR trigger lock preserves the original switch function, which should eliminate battery life concerns, and you can remove it if necessary for jams and repairs.
