Design Tips From Halloween Movies To Pull For Spooky Season

Each year, millions wait for fall, not just to see the leaves change or to feel the air get cooler, but to binge-watch as many Halloween movies as possible. Whether you like them kooky, spooky, or downright scary, everyone has a favorite one. You might even have a favorite Halloween movie house, like the Addams Family estate which has become popular for its unique style and decor. In honor of the spooky season, we looked at six designs from popular Halloween movies that are sure to inspire.

Integrating these tips will let you keep a spooky vibe up all year long even after you throw out that jack-o'-lantern once November comes. Rather than focusing on seasonal decorations, we examined what makes these interior designs so special, from rich color and kooky decor to natural elements and old-school glamour.  Each home is the work of talented set designers and visionary directors, but you can easily incorporate the feel of these sets into your own space. Here's how to bring some of that movie magic to your home and incorporate key design elements from Halloween movies.

Embrace rich color and the 1960s like the Love Witch

2016's "The Love Witch" is a maximalist's dream. The gorgeous Queen Anne-style house in the film features an eccentric blend of mod decor, occult elements, and deep colors. Director Anna Biller used aesthetics from the 1960s and the main character's tarot deck as inspiration for the set design. Biller told Metrograph, "I choose costumes and objects according to my attraction to them." You can get the look with jewel-toned accents, romantic meets gothic decor, and accouterments any hippie would adore. Follow Biller's lead and decorate with things that you enjoy regardless of whether or not they "fit" well.

Add creepy and kooky decor fit for the Addams Family

Did you know that the original Addams Family home was pink? In order to register as a vivid black and white on screen, the original "Addams Family" set was decorated with bubblegum pink carpet, wall color, and decor. So, if you're looking to match what the viewer saw in the show and subsequent films, you're going to need to think dark. The Addams family home is filled with odd, macabre, and darkly humorous decor. You can get their style by adding elements that beg the question, "Why?" Instead of shopping for a new collection, opt for conversation-starting antiques to nail the look.

Incorporate natural elements for some Practical Magic

The Owens' family home, as seen in "Practical Magic," is a stately Victorian that was actually created for the film by the design studio Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors. The witchy house is filled with dark wood accents, ornate crystal, and an entire conservatory's worth of plants. You can recreate this homey look by incorporating natural decor, plants, rustic wood, and clear glass accents. The home also features many handmade family heirlooms, so be sure to showcase your handcrafted decor as well.

Channel old Hollywood glamour from Death Becomes Her

Madeline Ashton's (Meryl Streep) Hollywood mansion in "Death Becomes Her" is a campy tribute to the extravagant glamour of the 1940s. Though she has no classic "witchy" decor, Ashton's estate is a love letter to youth, beauty, and high-class luxury. The interior design blends Gothic noir architectural designs with luxurious color palettes. If you want to lounge like Madeline, forget rustic and earthy linens, Madeline Ashton sleeps on pastel silk, and she prefers sitting at a vanity rather than bending over a bubbling cauldron. Decorate your space with ornate decor and soft lines.

Highlight fine woodwork and vintage furniture like in Clue

The house in "Clue" simply exudes classic interior design. It is filled with vintage decor, antique fixtures, and dark wood. Much like other houses on this list, the design style is heavily Gothic and Victorian, but there is a sophisticated 1920s color palette that includes the popular deep reds, golds, sapphires, and emeralds of the time. Getting the look will require visiting thrift stores, antique shops, and yard sales. Keep your eyes peeled for sophisticated jewel tones, dark wood, and colored glass decor.

Be strange and unusual like the Deetz family from Beetlejuice

When the Deetz family moves into the home of the late couple, Adam and Barbara, matriarch Delia Deetz's renovations don't go over so well. However, for fans of modern art and the macabre, Delia's interior design is dark, whimsical, and incredibly '80s. The unusual color combinations and use of industrial elements paired with unique statuary give the Deetz home character. To get the Deetz feel, marry harsh brutalist and modern art with a varied color scheme and unusual statement pieces. Go for angular lines, bold colors, and mixed materials.
