The Kitchen Ingredient That'll Wipe Out Stubborn Weeds

Weeds that pop up in a garden or lawn can be a nuisance at best and at worst, can destroy your precious plants. As soon as you notice them, it's best to get rid of those pesky weeds. Fortunately, the solution may be closer than you think, as it turns out vegetable oil can be an effective remedy.

On the lawn, weeds can quickly take over and leave an unsightly and uneven look. In the garden, they can quickly become a plant and flower killer, as they battle with your garden for resources. Weeds take nutrients from the soil, often resulting in your plants and lawn not getting sufficient amounts. They can also hog the sun and grow over grass and plants, leaving them in the shade. When this occurs, plants aren't able to get enough sunlight. While store-bought weed killers are effective, they may contain potentially harmful chemicals. If you're looking for a safer alternative, consider using vegetable oil.

Apply vegetable oil to weeds

Vegetable oil is often more affordable than buying a commercial weed killer. Even better, you can reuse the oil you've already cooked with, as it doesn't matter whether it is fresh from the bottle or already used. This is a win-win since you can spray the weeds using the oil that you would normally dispose of, and it will have the same lethal effects. Another added benefit is that vegetable oil is a completely safe and natural weed killer. Unlike with chemical herbicides, you won't have to worry about your children or pets while you save your garden.

If the vegetable oil has recently been cooked with, allow it to cool down sufficiently until it's room temperature. Then pour the contents into a spray bottle. Saturate the entire weed plant by spraying it with oil, making sure you generously cover the stems and all the leaves. The weeds infiltrating your yard will soon start to suffocate and die off, allowing more room and resources for your plants and grass.
