How To Make A Flower Vase Out Of A Pumpkin
While many of us associate Halloween with spooky, themed decorations, who's to say you can't add in some florals, too? Rather than plopping out any old pumpkin or carving a jack-o-lantern, you can create your own pumpkin vase to put your own floral twist on your yearly Halloween décor. It can add a pretty accent or be a wonderful centerpiece for your space. In fact, you can even continue using it year-round if you choose the right materials.
Naturally, this makes it the perfect item to craft if you host Halloween-themed events. You'll also get plenty of creative freedom and can add your own twists as you go. The best part is you don't have to be a DIY genius to figure it out. All it takes is a few simple steps, and you should be armed with a stunning pumpkin vase. So, how exactly do you make it?
Prepare your pumpkin for flowers
For this DIY Halloween pumpkin hack, you'll need a knife, some flowers of your choice, and a styrofoam or classic pumpkin. You can also grab some spray paint or glitter for some added fun — the way you decorate it will ultimately be up to you.
If you're using a real pumpkin, start by cutting a large hole at the top and removing the inner gunk so that you can fit your flower-filled vase inside. When it comes to flowers, light and airy colors are always a good choice, as seen in the example by @jodie.thedesigntwins, but you could also opt for something more Halloween-themed with deep colors that mimic fall foliage.
Using a real pumpkin can give you more of a rustic and traditional Halloween look when crafting your DIY vase, especially if you decide to leave the outside natural. On the other hand, you can play it up with paint or glitter. The only downside to this approach is that it won't keep for as long as a styrofoam pumpkin would — only between three to five days.
You can also try styrofoam
If you're using a styrofoam pumpkin, make sure you select one that's large enough to accommodate a vase. Your best bet is to measure the size of your vase beforehand so you can get the perfect fit, adding a small bit of extra space to give some leeway.
The rest of the process is similar to the original method. Cut a hole at the top, and hollow out the inside if it is filled with solid styrofoam. Now, you can decorate your pumpkin. You can use different spray painting techniques and add some small decorations, ribbons, or glitter. For flowers, you can get creative and experiment with different colors. Once you decide, simply place them into your vase in your pumpkin and arrange the flowers how you like. Since you don't need to worry about the pumpkin going bad, your styrofoam setup will last as long as the flowers last, which is usually anywhere between seven to 12 days. Once the flowers start to wither, you can add in new ones or store away the vase for next season.
