Keep Spiders Out Of Your Home With An Ingredient From Your Kitchen
Spiders play a crucial role in controlling insects, which is why they're a great addition to your outdoor areas. Indoor is another story. While you may not want to kill these spiders, sharing a living space with them can give you the heebie-jeebies. This is why garlic is a great way to tell them that they need to keep patrolling the perimeter outside your home, not getting comfortable on the inside.
This is because arachnids, certain insects, and other critters have a super heightened sense of smell to hone in on what's edible. Garlic's funky fragrance disrupts the spider's ability to pick up these scents. As a result, they are less likely to venture into areas where the scent is present, such as corners and along baseboards, effectively helping to keep them out of your home.
A word of caution, though. While garlic is the surefire winner for keeping your spider army in line, it's also not a friend to your four-legged fur babies. If you have cats or dogs in your home, use garlic cautiously as large amounts can be toxic to them. Be sure to stash or spray it where it can't be reached and accidentally ingested.
Making your DIY spider repellent
To get rid of spiders using garlic, just smash a couple of cloves, toss them into a spray bottle filled with water, and let it chill for a day. After that, go ahead and spray it in the areas where trespassing spiders have shown their presence, like along baseboards and in dark corners. When using this miraculous solution, remember to be careful with certain surfaces because it can possibly leave a stain. Alternately, you can place freshly chopped garlic inside a tied-off coffee filter and strategically set them in spider-laden areas.
While garlic is pretty effective for keeping spiders away, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. The smell is potent to humans as well. If you're not thrilled about your place smelling like a pizza shop, you can add certain essential oils. Cedar, lavender, or peppermint oils, can be added to your solution to enhance the scent and give its repellent properties a turbo-boost.
