Keep This Fragrant Herb Around The House To Ward Off Cockroaches

Just the word "roach" gives us the creepy crawlies. We hate to think of them lurking inside our cabinets and pantries, just waiting for us to turn off the lights so they can crawl all over our countertops. Beyond the ick factor of having roaches in the kitchen, these pests carry some potentially serious pathogens. The bodily fluids they leave behind as they scurry around your home could contain salmonella, E. coli, and other bacteria that can lead to health issues. While these problems should resolve quickly in healthy adults, others aren't as lucky. Children, older family members, or anyone who is immune-compromised can experience severe reactions. Even if you're healthy, just the idea of roach feces on the surfaces where you prepare food should be enough to take action. Luckily, there is an herb that can help.

There are plenty of pesticides on the market and pest control companies that can manage unwanted roaches. Some of these chemicals are very powerful and are not suitable for areas with small children or pets. If you have seen a roach or two, consider using lavender to repel them before diving into harsh pesticides.

Lavender as a roach repellant

You can use lavender in any form to repel roaches. While humans generally find this fragrant herb pleasant and calming, roaches hate it. Lavender in any form works to send roaches packing because it's the scent they are avoiding. If you use 100% lavender essential oil in a diffuser or for other personal purposes, you can create a repellant spray. Fill a standard spray bottle with water and add about 20 drops of this essential oil. Use the spray in dark cupboards, behind appliances, or anywhere you have spotted a roach. If you don't have essential oils handy, you can also simmer dried lavender in water, and use that liquid to make a spray.

While this DIY repellant may work if you have a few roaches, it is not powerful enough to ward off a whole infestation. In that situation, you will likely need pesticides to rid your home of those nasty buggers and keep your family healthy. If this is the route you need to take, carefully adhere to safety precautions on the package or call a professional.
