TikToker Shares How She Duped HGTV's Dream Home Curtains

The coveted HGTV Dream Home prize is an opportunity for the channel to showcase modern architecture, interior design, and innovative home technologies. It's fun to view the winning homes each year and gather inspiration for how you can spruce up your own space. One TikToker checked out the 2022 Dream Home and noticed a styling hack that could solve her puddled curtains problem.

After paying attention to how the curtains were hung in the transformed Vermont home, she discovered that she could get them to hang a bit higher from the ground by switching her curtain rings from being clipped at the top. "It's been bothering me so badly that they touch the ground. I had measured wrong because I didn't take into consideration the length of the curtain ring," she explains in her TikTok. To recreate the look, she clips the curtain rings to the strings behind the curtain so they lift the curtains a bit higher. One caveat to this hack is that you'll need two additional rings for the ends of the curtain.

Other ways to fix puddled curtains

As user @annadani notes in her video, curtains should ideally graze the floor instead of being too obviously long or short. This way, they don't look awkward or collect dirt from the floor. A general rule is to aim between 1/4 and 1/2 inches away from the floor. The length also depends on the look you're going for in the room. A longer length works for a more formal or sophisticated look, while a shorter length is for a more laid-back atmosphere.

If the Dream Home dupe doesn't work to make your curtains shorter, there are other things to try. Probably the most common way is by hemming. All you need to do is measure the desired length and mark it, bring the curtain down, fold it to meet the mark, hem it by hand or with a sewing machine, and trim any excess fabric. You can also use iron-on hem tape if you don't want to sew.
