Finding a cockroach in your home can be disturbing. You might wonder how it got there in the first place because you keep your home clean. However, even though your living space may be neat and free of clutter, you may inadvertently be bringing them into your home. In fact, the best way to keep cockroaches out of your home is to get rid of cardboard boxes.

Generally speaking, cockroaches like to locate nesting areas that are warm and moist, especially if there are crumbs or food around. They can hide out in all sorts of areas of the home, including kitchen cabinets and even toasters to get remnants of food. They can also hide under sinks and along pipes, especially if there are leaks so they can have access to water.

They are masters at hiding in small, dark places, and thrive in messy areas. Though you may clean regularly and not keep any clutter around, the cardboard boxes brought into your home may be the source of the problem.

Cardboard boxes offer the ideal conditions for cockroaches to hide and then subsequently breed. They often go unseen in between the corrugated areas inside the layers of the box. Since that is such a great hiding place, they also tend to lay eggs in these hard-to-find spaces.

Under the right conditions, it's easy to see how you can end up with a cockroach infestation in no time. Boxes often come into the home by way of delivery trucks which have been with several other boxes for hours or even days at a time. Even before they get loaded onto trucks, they have been in factories for much longer, potentially exposed to all sorts of insects. The same can be said for boxes that are used when moving, especially when borrowing boxes from friends that have been kept around for a while.

The best thing to do is remove any type of cardboard boxes from your home as soon as you can. Don't leave boxes to pile up. After moving, promptly unpack and throw away cardboard boxes. When storing items in closets, basements, or garages, use plastic bins with covers on them to secure items and also to reduce the chances of attracting cockroaches.
