You Won't Recognize This IKEA LACK Table After One Stunning Transformation

IKEA is a DIYer's playground. The simple products the home furnishings retailer sells lend perfectly to customization. Time and again, home DIYers have shown their creativity by combining IKEA products to make dupes of more expensive furniture pieces. For example, TikToker The Ursula Edit (@theursulaedit) shared an IKEA LACK hack, where she combined a LACK table with the EKET storage system to create a sleek modern coffee table. The Ursula Edit actually gives credit to @saraalexandrahome as the originator of the hack; however, The Ursula Edit provides a full DIY tutorial on her account.

Similar coffee tables sold by furniture retailers have a high price point. The Vayle concrete coffee table from CB2, for example, is $499, while Joss & Main prices its Alibi coffee table at $780. The Dove coffee table from All Modern, meanwhile, will cost you $830. But with this viral TikTok, you can recreate something very similarly stylish while only spending a fraction of the cost.

Hack the LACK

As TikToker The Urusla Edit explains, for this furniture hack, you'll need the IKEA LACK coffee table and the EKET storage system. There are two versions of the IKEA LACK table — a smaller and a larger version. The smaller version is 35 ⅜ inches by 21 ⅝ inches, and the larger version is 46 ½ inches by 30 ¾ inches; the tables cost $44.99 and $69.99 respectively. The EKET cabinet, meanwhile, costs $20 and measures 13 ¾ inches in width, 9 ⅞ inches in depth, and 13 ¾ inches in height. To put everything together, The Ursula Edit used UniBond No More Nails adhesive, which costs $17 on Amazon.

The project starts by removing the legs and bottom shelf from a LACK table. If new in the box, however, you'll just need the tabletop. Next, you'll need to put the EKET cabinet together. Once assembled, apply adhesive to the front edges of the cabinet and then place is onto the underside of the LACK tabletop. Weigh the pieces down with heavy items to keep everything in place while the adhesive dries. Allow your glue to dry for at least 24 hours before flipping the IKEA hack over. For around $80 to $110, you've got a high-end-looking coffee table.

Customizing IKEA projects

In @theursulaedit's TikTok, both the LACK table and the EKET have a white finish. However, as with other IKEA hacks, you can easily transform IKEA furniture with paint. However, because of the laminate finish on IKEA furniture, paint won't stick to the surface without sanding it down first. Use 120-grit sandpaper to remove the laminate and wipe away any dust once finished. Then, you can prime and paint your piece.

You can also use a thin layer of cement on the surface of your new coffee table to make it appear like it's made of concrete, which can elevate the design even further. You can also use fluted millwork around the base of the table to give the effect of a reeded finish. High-quality vinyl contact paper, meanwhile, can make the tabletop look like marble. Getting creative to create a unique statement piece is all part of the fun of IKEA DIYs.
