Can You Send A Backpack Through The Laundry?

Your backpack travels with you everywhere, and over time, it can become extremely dirty. Whether it's picked up grime from the floor or if something's been spilled on it, you might be wondering if you can put your backpack through the laundry. Depending on what type of material your bag is made of, it could go in the washing machine. Nylon, canvas, and polyester backpacks are all safe in the washer, as long as you run them on a cold, gentle cycle. Leather bags or backpacks with intricate decorations, like embroidery or patches, however, will likely need to be washed by hand.

When machine washing a backpack, you'll need to put it in a mesh laundry bag or a pillowcase to protect it. Most backpacks fare well in the washing machine, but putting them in the dryer isn't the best idea. The heat can damage the fabric, so it's best to hang or air-dry your bag.

How to clean a backpack in a washing machine

Before washing your backpack, it's a good idea to check the label inside for care instructions. This will help you determine how to wash your backpack if you're unsure. When you're ready to wash, empty the bag and remove any surface dirt, both outside the backpack and inside of pockets, with a brush or vacuum. You could also try shaking the backpack (with all zippers open) over a trash can to knock loose any remaining debris. If your bag is stained, put your favorite stain remover on it or combine 1 teaspoon of laundry detergent with warm water to spot-treat the stain.

Next, turn the backpack inside out, and place it into your pillowcase or laundry bag. Put the bag into your washing machine and add enough detergent for a small load. Make sure to run your washing machine on a gentle cycle with cold water and then air-dry your bag once done. While some backpack materials aren't suitable to go in the washing machine, most will be unharmed and come out cleaner than ever.
