Extend The Life Of Your Soap Bar With A Handy Aluminum Foil Hack

Most people have a real love-hate situation with their soap bars. On one hand, they can be more environmentally friendly since they come in easily-recyclable cardboard packaging rather than thick plastic bottles. They can also be made with lots of organic, good-for-you ingredients, or they can be easily made at home if you like to DIY your own products. But they can also be extremely messy. While they might look nice on their soap holder when they're brand new and yet-to-be used, that quickly changes. They become slimy once they get wet, and since they take ages to dry, they create a gross, soupy mess on their holders. Soap scum builds up, and the holder requires a deep clean once a week. But aluminum foil can help with that.

Rather than succumbing to the messiness of soap, you can use a sheet of aluminum foil as a protective layer between it and its holder or your shower ledge. This soap bar hack will not only help your bar dry faster, but it will also make chore day much easier since you don't have to chip away at dried soap gunk. Here's how to pull it off.

How to use aluminum foil in the shower

To help curb the messiness of a soap bar, run to your kitchen and grab a sheet of aluminum foil. To stop it from getting wet suds everywhere, fold the aluminum into a small square that is big enough to cover the holder. Place your bar of soap on top, and there you have it! A safeguard that will keep your shower or bath looking much cleaner. Once it does become a soupy mess, simply remove the foil, toss it out, and replace it with a fresh sheet.

If you want to find a way to help your soap dry faster and ensure there is no mess left behind, you can use another aluminum foil tactic. Cut out a larger piece of foil, and use it to wrap the used soap in it. That way, it doesn't sit in a puddle of water and slowly dissolve. When you want to use it again during your next shower, simply unwrap it.

Why this works

Much like how aluminum foil keeps oxygen and moisture away from your food in the fridge, it does the same for your soap. It might be lightweight, but it's a great disposable protective barrier both inside and outside of the kitchen. For soap in particular, it's a waterproof barrier that keeps the bar from touching the tray. This ensures it doesn't get slimy residue on the holder, forcing you to later clean it up. On the other hand, if you decide to wrap it in foil after using it, it keeps the soap bar from sitting in water and prevents the shower spray from bouncing all over it, making it dissolve faster.

If messy soap is a constant headache for you, this is an affordable solution that uses items you probably already have in your home. (It can also be used for soap bars by the sink, helping you stop messes all over the bathroom!)
