A Design Expert Explains What An Anchoring Point Is And How To Use It For A Cohesive Space

In interior design, an anchoring point, or anchor piece, refers to a prominent and visually dominant element that serves as a focal point in a room or space. It acts as a central reference point around which the rest of the décor and furnishings are arranged. According to Phoenix Grey, skipping this in a room is a big mistake because it leaves it feeling uneasy and visually overwhelming. "An anchoring point can be anything in the space in terms of color or style making sure it draws your attention, like a large piece of artwork, chandelier, or even a sofa," he explains in this TikTok

The purpose of an anchoring point is to create balance and harmony in the space by providing a strong visual foundation. It helps guide the design and layout of the room, making it easier to arrange other elements around it as it'll be the main focus. An anchoring point can also help create a cohesive theme or style throughout the space, tying everything together for a unified and appealing look.

What counts as an anchoring point?

The anchoring point can be anything like a large vintage mirror, a striking item of furniture, or an accent wall with a bold color or pattern, as long as it's something that complements the overall design scheme and reflects your personal taste. The item or feature should also be able to capture and hold the attention of anyone who enters the room. "If your eyes don't have somewhere to rest in a space, you are constantly looking around and it doesn't feel at ease," says Phoenix Grey (via TikTok).

In a living room, a beautifully detailed fireplace can serve as the anchoring point, while a statement headboard or framed photo above the bed can play this role in the bedroom. A rug with an intricate design, like a Persian rug, can also anchor the room and is a great way to tie together the various colors. If you want to use an armchair or a dining table, it also needs to be a strong and impressive piece.

How to use an anchoring point for a cohesive space

For artwork, you'll need one, eye-catching art piece or a collection of multiple pieces. Art can work positioned anywhere, from the hallway to the bathroom, as long as you choose the right size and spot for it. Consider brightening up your entryway with a colorful piece, adding a contemporary piece to your foyer, or creating a gallery wall of some family photos in the living room. Generally, avoid leaving a statement art piece by itself on the wall, rather hang it above a chair, side table, bed, or next to a tall plant instead.

A well-designed bookshelf or display cabinet can also become a focal point in a room, showcasing books, collectibles, or other decorative items. This can take a bit more work though as you'll need to ensure that all the items are grouped and arranged intentionally so everything feels balanced. A large, decorative mirror in an interesting geometric shape or cut is another great choice. Whatever you choose as an anchor piece, always consider the layout and proportions of the room so it fits in seamlessly.
