Make A Caned Accent Table For Cheap With An IKEA Hack

If you enjoy a more minimalistic home decor style or are planning to keep your bedroom color scheme soothing and simplistic, it can be quite a challenge to find a balance between something subtle and something boring. The deciding factor in most cases is texture, and this DIY accent table from YouTuber Emily Faith can bring a dose of trendy visual interest to any space without compromising the rest of the room's calming look.

Beyond the appeal of the final result, this DIY accent table also has another major bonus — the price. Modern furniture, despite its simplicity, can get quite expensive, especially if you're on the hunt for a specific style or texture in a piece. Doing it yourself using pieces from IKEA, however, should only bring your grand total to a little over $100 for materials, and you have the freedom to explore different options to fully customize your final product to your liking.

What materials you'll need

To complete this DIY yourself, you're going to need one piece from IKEA as well as some additional supplies from the hardware store if you don't already have them on hand. In her video, YouTuber Emily Faith is using the IKEA TARVA Nightstand as her base as well as a small amount of caning to create the texture on the front of the drawers. You'll also need a saw, some thin trim, a staple gun, sandpaper, wood glue, and your stain of choice.

The creator of this video already had caning leftover from a rattan headboard project she had previously done. But, if you don't have any on hand you can easily find options on Amazon, like this Savita Cane Rattan Webbing Roll. There are plenty of patterns and styles available, so feel free to customize the finish to your taste. For one nightstand, you'll only need a piece that's about 18 inches by 12 inches, so you'll likely have leftovers for a future project.

How to build this piece yourself

Once you have all of your materials on hand, you can get to work building. In the video, Emily Faith begins by sawing down the slight overhang on the top of the nightstand, then sanding the edges to smooth everything out. This step is optional if you don't have the necessary tools on hand, but it makes it look a bit more sleek and modern. From there, she stains the pieces of the dresser as well as the pieces of trim. Eventually, she decided to go back in with a whitewash because she didn't like the finished color, so cater your stain choices to your desired look to avoid this step.

After this, she cuts trim pieces to create a border for the face of the drawer, angling the corners at 45 degrees so they line up. Finally, it's time to tackle the rattan. Submerge it in some water to make it more malleable, then cut it to size using the trim as a guide. Staple it down on the front of the drawer after removing the knobs, glue the trim pieces on top, and you have a totally transformed piece on a budget.
