The TikTok-Approved Blue Light Tool That Banishes Bugs From Your Kitchen For Good

Nothing can ruin your fruit craving like seeing little fruit flies flying around your kitchen. They make you second-guess eating that apple you were hoping to enjoy, and instead of having one, you might just throw them all away. Getting rid of bugs for good can be challenging, and while fruit flies don't carry diseases inside of them, they can carry bacteria on them that can spread when they land on fruit, making you sick if you consume it. However, TikToker user @mama_tyger revealed her greatest hack to catch all bugs surrounding the kitchen. A blue light plug-in tool with a sticky cartridge catches the bugs.

Rather than running to grab your electric fly swatter, the blue light tool attracts bugs and traps them. You simply plug it into your kitchen outlet and wait for it to do its magic. When the cartridge gets full, switch it out with a new one. The TikToker has her blue light with the same cartridge for a year before switching it out, showing how effective the tool really is.

Place the blue light tool near the fruits

In TikTok user @mama_tyger's video, she has her blue light tool plugged in near her toaster. She gives a much-needed warning before showing her viewers a year's worth of bugs that got stuck behind the blue light tool. The TikToker claims the sticky insert could catch any bug, from fruit flies to mosquitoes to flies. If you always have flies or gnats flying around your house that you can never catch with a fly swatter, the blue light tool will do the work for you.

The trap seen in the video is the Zevo Indoor Flying Insect Trap, which is available at Target for $20.99 with a plug-in base and one refill cartridge. It's non-toxic, odorless, and chemical free, so it's safe to have in your home. The company recommends checking the cartridge every 15 days to see if it needs to be replaced. You can place the blue light tool anywhere in your house where you see bugs flying, such as your garage, enclosed patio, or near trash cans.

Another more affordable option is Walmart's Indoor Insect Trap with Suction, that's $8.99. Walmart's version resembles a portable speaker, making it more decorative for your home. It has a small opening where blue light emits, attracts the flies, and sucks them inside with a fan. Once the flies enter the trap, you can easily dispose of them and place the container back. You don't need to purchase a new insert.

Why the blue light tool works

Bugs are phototactic, meaning they either move toward light or away from it. Positively phototactic bugs — including flies, moths, and stink bugs– move toward the light. There are many theories as to why this is. Some say these creatures are used to using the moon to guide them and often mistake bright artificial light for moonlight. On the other hand, some say that bugs use light as an escape mechanism if they feel a predator nearby.

While most bright lights will lure in bugs, there are specific colors that are more powerful than others. Blue, green, and Ultraviolet light are more visible to bugs than yellow, pink, or orange, making them highly attractive to these pests. So, when flies make their way into your home, blue light can help you to effectively trap them. Give this method a try wherever you see bugs making themselves at home in your space.
