Use The Viral IKEA Wooden Bowl Hack To Create The Spherical Coffee Table Of Your Dreams

Curves and rounded shapes have become popular features of current interior design trends. Gentle curves, when done right, have the ability to look timeless as well as modern and current. They're also softer, adding a comforting warmth to a space. It's no wonder that coffee tables with spherical legs have become a sought-after feature for statement coffee tables. These coffee tables have three or four spherical legs, often made of wood, and typically hold up a round or oval-shaped tabletop made of wood, marble, or sometimes glass.

However, like any statement piece of furniture, many of these spherical-legged coffee tables can be quite pricey. The Sonali round coffee table from Anthropologie is $1,598. While a similar style from Eternity Modern, made of a statement green marble, is priced at $3,599. However, TikTok user Chris-Ann, who posts home décor DIYs on the platform, shared how to recreate the look for much less. In a TikTok, she used Blanda Matt bamboo serving bowls from IKEA to create the iconic spherical bases before attaching a round marble tabletop. The results look like it's come straight off the pages of a luxury home catalog at a fraction of the price.

A DIY statement

You won't have to go far to source the materials for this DIY project. The Blanda Matt serving bowls from IKEA used in this project come in three sizes: 5 inches, 8 inches, and 11 inches, priced at $9.99, $15.99, and $24.99, respectively. You'll need two bowls to make one sphere. The larger the bowls, the larger the spheres, and the higher off the ground the table will sit. In the TikTok video, Chris-Ann uses six of the 11-inch bowls to create three spherical table legs. The cost for the bowls would be about $150.

In a comment left on the video, someone asked where Chris-Ann found the tabletop. She responded by saying it was from a table she already had but suggested using Facebook Marketplace to source a table to use for a similar project. However, there are places online where you can purchase a marble tabletop, such as through Webstaurant Store, for $148.49. Buying a slab of marble and having it fabricated into a tabletop is also an option, but it may be pricier than the others. However, this option allows you to find unique pieces of stone for the coffee table.

Other materials used for the project include wood glue, wood filler, sandpaper, and a wood stain. She uses disks that sit in the depressed foot of the bowls with glue on both sides to connect the spherical bases to the tabletop.

A simple DIY project

The actual project is pretty simple to do and can easily be done on a weekend. Chris-Ann starts by gluing the bowls together using wood glue from Gorilla. The simple wood glue is most likely a PVA glue, which is ideal for simple woodworking projects because it's inexpensive and cleans up with water. Once the glue dries and cures, it's extremely strong, ensuring your coffee table will be stable. Apply the glue to the top lip of a bowl, then place another bowl on top. Once you do that to create all the spheres, you'll want to put something on top to apply pressure while the glue dries, about 24 hours, according to Chris-Ann.

After the glue dries, apply a wood filler to the seam where the bowls meet to create a smooth spherical surface. Once that dries, sand down the seam and the sphere as a whole. Next, apply the wood stain of your choice, or if you prefer some color, you can paint the spheres. Once the stain or paint dries, apply glue to both sides of the disks, and place one disk into the foot of the bowl before attaching the tabletop. Apply weight on top while the glue dries. After 24 hours, you'll have a stylish statement coffee table for less than $500.
