How Joanna Gaines Uses Cube Storage To Optimize Home Organization
Joanna Gaines, interior designer and co-host of HGTV's "Fixer Upper," is giving away one of many secrets to organized home storage: cubbies. Cubed storage isn't just for college dorm rooms and elementary schools; it can be utilized in interior design to create efficient and stylish storage. "You can change the idea of these boxes — keep the concept the same, but change it whether you used reclaimed wood [or] slatted wood," Gaines said, per Best Life. "As time goes on, you can add to it, take away, [or] modify it." Open-concept storage can drastically change how a space is organized. Say goodbye to cluttered closets and junk drawers and instead store items within eyesight. This keeps track of what you own so that months or years down the line, you aren't clearing out a closet wishing you hadn't forgotten all the wonderful items packed away for so long.
In true cubby fashion, Gaines also advises using open crates and boxes to store books, plants, and home décor in modular shelving. Not only is it more affordable than buying brand-new bookshelves and hutches, but there is a satisfying charm found in the DIY of it all. "You can really incorporate this look anywhere, whether it be the living room or a kid's bedroom, a playroom, or even a mudroom," she said (via Real Homes). "[It's] great for storage, but it also can highlight any of your favorite art pieces, your favorite books — so it can really go a long way."
Other cubed storage solutions
Storage cubes have incredibly versatile use throughout the home, and as you consider implementing them in your spaces, here are some ways they can be utilized. While plain drip coffee may not always meet our cravings, a coffee bar is an excellent kitchen or dining room addition that can easily be constructed with cubed storage. The compartments will give you ample space to showcase all your intricate mugs, spice and syrup canisters, and different kinds of expressos and coffee beans. An entertainment stand can also be made from cubes, as we typically need an accessible place to store gaming consoles, movies, and board games. Using cubbies for shoe racks near the front door will advocate for organization as soon as you enter. With a lower shelving unit, the top can be used as a bench for tying up your laces, and hooks can be installed above to complete the area with coat and hat holders.
Also, consider switching out a nightstand with a single drawer for a cubed option that meets your bedroom needs. You'll still have a spacious tabletop for a lamp and nightly glass of water, but you'll no longer need to try and squeeze in all your books. If you prefer something more concealed, insert baskets inside the square. Cubed floating shelves are an accessory that can find a place in any space, whether in the bathroom to hold soap, cotton swabs, and towels or in the hallways to showcase pottery and family photos.
