Decorating Your Walls Is Easy With This DIY Wireless Wall Sconce Hack

Enhancing a room with additional lighting can have a profound impact on its ambiance and functionality. However, installation challenges like pocket doors, the desire to avoid electrical work, or living in a rental where you're not allowed to put holes in the walls can put a cap on installing hardwired light fixtures. Fortunately, transforming a standard wall sconce into a wireless eco-friendly lighting source is a breeze, and takes less than half an hour to complete. All you'll need to do for this fun and simple DIY project is to mount a sconce in the desired location and install a battery-operated puck light.

Puck lights come in all shapes and sizes and also brightnesses and colors. For projects like this, it's recommended to use puck lights that are remote-controlled or rechargeable. Keep in mind that battery-powered lighting isn't meant to illuminate an entire room and is more for aesthetics and mood.

How to use puck lights

Once you've purchased your ideal wall sconce (or sconces), decide on the perfect placement. If you've purchased a pair, consider placing them on either side of a focal point like a mirror or fireplace. Locate the backplate and installation instructions, and using the plate screw holes as a stencil, slightly mark the exact positions on the wall. Don't forget to use a level to make sure everything is straight. Drill holes according to the markings and then mount the backplate securely to the wall using the provided anchors and screws.

To ensure a clean look, you'll want to tuck the unused electrical wires away in the space inside the mount then follow the instructions to mount the rest of the lighting fixture and screw everything together. Attach a light socket adapter to the back of the puck light using hot glue, and give it some time to cure. Once the adhesive is completely dry, simply screw the light socket adapter into the light fixture, just as you would with a regular light bulb.

There are a few minor hitches

Depending on the type of batteries you use and how often you keep them on, you might have to replace the batteries more often than you'd like. Also, when compared to your standard lightbulb, battery-operated lights might not shine as brightly. Even LEDs sometimes just can't match the same level of brightness and illumination. For this reason, it's important to make sure you go for puck lights with the highest lumens to get the best brightness possible.

In the event that your puck light stops working, you will need to replace it entirely, which can be a potentially precarious task depending on the location of your wall sconce. Wireless sconces that utilize battery-operated lights are often activated by an on/off switch or push button. Some are even touch-activated, however puck lights that include a remote for turning them on and off are the most convenient. This type of remote-controlled lighting means you may also be able to dim and possibly change the color of the light, depending on the make and model.
