TikTok's Dollar Store Vase Hack Uses Coffee In An Unexpected Way

Making your home look like an abode straight out of a magazine doesn't have to break the bank. With a little creativity and a trip to the dollar store, you can create beautiful customized decor for just a few bucks. These personalized pieces are great for tying in the more expensive items you have to give your space a creative look. If your house has a country feel to it, then you'll love this TikTok hack that uses coffee to create a rustic-looking vase for no more than $5 (via TikTok).

This DIY was put together by TikTok user @CraftGrooms, whose work has been featured on The Drew Barrymore Show and Rachael Ray's website. It uses three simple items from Dollar Tree: the Tumbling Tower Game (similar to Jenga) and two different-sized glass vases. You'll also need a glue gun and coffee. Why coffee? According to this TikToker, it's able to "bring out the natural wood grain."

When you get home from your trip to the dollar store, you'll want to brew a pot of coffee. Then, dump your wood blocks into a container and pour the coffee over the pieces once it's cooled down. As they soak, they'll develop a nice, warm color. Next, you'll want to place them on a drying rack. It's very important to make sure that they're completely dry. You can let them sit overnight if you need to. If not, you may have difficulty gluing them to the vase.

Once your wood pieces are dry, glue them to the vase starting at the bottom, leaving about 1 inch or 1 ½ between each block. It's also a good idea to space out the bottom row to see how it looks before you start gluing. For the next row, you'll want to place a block over the gap between the blocks of the first row. Repeat this pattern all the way around and continue doing so until you get to the top of the vase. Allow the glue to dry, and then fill your adorable new creation with flowers, plants, or candles. 

This dollar store hack has been viewed over 6.5 million times (via TikTok). Fans of @CraftGrooms went wild for this project. "Ok, finally a good Dollar Tree DIY on TikTok! Love this one," wrote one commenter. "I"m heading to Dollar Tree now!" wrote another. Interestingly enough, you can use coffee as a stain for all kinds of wooden items, including furniture. 

First, brew your coffee according to how dark you want your stain to be. The stronger you make it, the darker it will be. Let it cool while you sand down whatever it is you want to stain, making sure all the sand is completely removed. Next, dip a rag, paintbrush, or sponge into the coffee and paint your wooden piece with it. Apply the stain in even layers so your colors look uniform. Once you're done, let it dry for 15 minutes. You can continue to apply additional layers after the first has dried if you want your stain to come out darker. Once you've reached the color you prefer, wipe your piece down with a clean cloth and let it fully dry.
