The Time Battle On The Beach's Taniya Nayak Turned A Shower Curtain Into A Piece Of Art

When it comes to buying décor for your home, you never know what you might find. Sometimes you don't find anything that catches your eye or falls under your budget. The best way to get what you truly want is to make it yourself; bring your vision to life and use what you already have. HGTV's "Build It Forward" star Taniya Nayak created a piece of art using a wood frame and a shower curtain during an episode of "Battle On The Beach." She displayed it in a vacation home's living room, proving that you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on artwork when you can make it yourself. The shower curtain canvas brought elegance and comfort to the living room.

Hanging artwork in any room in the house can add texture, personality, and contrast to the space. Moreover, when you want to limit the number of different design elements in a room, you can use the art as the focal point. Artwork can take up a vast amount of space on a wall that you won't need other over-the-top embellishments (unless you're choosing to design a maximalist interior), and subtle décors will complement the main piece, like Nayak's shower curtain frame.

DIY artwork is more affordable

During the "Living Room Showdown" episode of season 2, three teams had to transform a mundane vacation home's living room into a sophisticated, homey, and cozy space. A few teams added stone and wood features to their room, while Taniya Nayak incorporated a one-of-a-kind shower curtain frame. Nayak noted, "This is a cheap way to create a 'wow' moment. All we have to do is stretch a graphic-printed shower curtain over a frame and voila, instant art," per Realtor.com. The artwork consisted of a large duck with pink and white feathers by the water, costing $75 to make. Nayak displayed the artwork on the wall above the couch, noticeable from every entryway. Plus, it elevated the living room by incorporating a pop of pink into the neutral space.

When decorating your resting area, look into different frames you might want to use that will fit your budget. The larger the structure, the more expensive it will be. However, check your local thrift shop to see what sizes they offer. You'll get a good deal on a used frame, and you won't have to worry about its condition since the shower curtain will cover the entire front side. As for shower curtains, you might consider buying a new one or using one you own. Pick one that will let your personality shine.

Tips to replicate the shower curtain frame

If you have a shower curtain that you haven't thrown away because you love the print, now's the time to recycle it and display it in your house. You don't have to hang it in your living room; put it in a bedroom or a bathroom if it fits best with the interior. Or, instead of making it take up an entire wall, add it to a gallery wall so it can stand alongside other pieces that you love.

When you're replicating the shower curtain frame, you want to ensure you measure the curtain to be larger than the wooden frame so that it folds over the sides. Always measure slightly more to avoid overcutting the curtain, whether you use a bigger or smaller frame. It's best to mark your measurements with a pen or marker so that you know where to cut instead of cutting it blind. On the other hand, it can get tricky to glue the curtain to the frame because you'll have overlap on the corners. Cut between the corners where the edges meet to prevent air bubbles and overlap. You can also opt to use a staple gun to attach the curtain to the frame.
