Hide Messes By Stealing Gwyneth Paltrow's Trendy Kitchen Flooring
As founder and CEO of the lifestyle brand Goop, actor Gwyneth Paltrow wields considerable influence when it comes to style, including home décor and interior design. For the latter, she's known for showing off her gorgeous home on Instagram, and it was in one of her posts that we took notice of her trendy kitchen floor. What stood out to us, beyond how the tiled floor complemented her kitchen's cabinetry, was the fact that this dark flooring would likely do well in hiding messes, such as spills.
If you live in a home prone to messes (aka you have pets or children), you're probably used to cleaning up spills in your kitchen. When you have light kitchen floors, stains aren't very easy to cover up, so you have no choice but to clean them — when you see them. But if you have floors like in Gwyneth Paltrow's kitchen, you might be able to hold off on cleaning those messes for a bit longer.
The perks of the flooring's design
In the case of Gwyneth Paltrow's kitchen flooring, it's not only the color black that catches our eye; it's the pattern, too: hexagons. When designing your kitchen, you could choose typical square tiles, but Paltrow's trendy kitchen flooring makes us reconsider how we want our kitchen floors to look as well. The six-sided hexagon is a type of shape that's never really out of style, so the idea of incorporating both a darker color (that can more easily hide messes) and an eye-catching shape into a kitchen's interior space is a design choice that's likely to see more benefit than regret as the years go on.
As for those messes, obviously, we're not encouraging you not to clean your floors; we're just showing you a low-maintenance design option to give yourself a break. Also, when it comes to hexagons, depending on your personal style, you can always choose larger tiles, which give the illusion of a more spacious area.
A word on darker color floors
While Gwyneth Paltrow's black kitchen floors may more easily hide stains and spills, there are some downsides to having dark floors. For starters, you can see dust a lot easier than you would on lighter-colored tile or wood. That being said, if you have pets that shed frequently — particularly those with gray or white fur — you might want to opt for something other than black (unless you always have a vacuum on hand). Additionally, dark colors don't disguise scratches the same way light ones do. You really have to be careful when moving furniture, for example, so as to not damage your floor.
Note that tile, such as seen in Paltrow's kitchen, is a more scratch-resistant surface, regardless of color. However, there are instances when a scratch could show on tile, particularly dark tile, such as if scratched by metal; for example, a knife accidentally falling to the kitchen floor or a stool with metal legs scraping the surface. For the most part, though, you likely won't need to worry too much about scratches when it comes to tile flooring, but the dust and certain types of spills, such as anything that dries a light color, will obviously show.
