How To Recreate The Trendy TikTok Mirror Wall
Though TikTok may be young, this social media platform is the driving force behind many of the internet's latest trends. With over one billion active users, TikTok ranks sixth in the world's most popular social platforms, according to Demand Sage. The quick and eye-catching videos allow trends and ideas to spread quickly. But it's creating content for the platform that has users thinking creatively.
With the majority of users being teens and young adults, there is plenty of content above decorating one's space, whether that's a bedroom, first apartment, dorm room, or new house. The creativity of users has them taking inexpensive décor pieces and using them in new ways, often to duplicate more expensive or luxury home items. And one item TikTok loves to put a spin on is a mirror.
Videos across the platform show how to upgrade simple store-bought mirrors with foam, plaster, and clay. But what has been tried time and time again is the large mirror wall. While there are companies that sell massive mirrors that take up an entire wall of a room, TikTok creators have found a way to recreate the style for less.
First, head to IKEA
Many TikTok users are taking inspiration from grid designs, like the Jamie Young metal grid mirror at Bloomingdale's (originally $705, but now on sale for $437.40). This price point is out of budget for many people, but that didn't stop them from making a budget-friendly dupe in their homes. User ElocinHome bought frameless IKEA mirror squares to achieve the look. The BLODLÖNN mirrors come in a pack of four for $12.99.
ElocinHome started by taping off a rectangle on her wall using painter's tape, then filling the shape with a matte black paint from Valspar. Once dry, she measures the length and width of the rectangle to determine the spacing of the mirror squares. According to a comment she responded to, she places the squares 2.5 centimeters apart, leaving room on all sides to create a border. You'll want to use heavy-duty picture hanging strips to keep the mirror secured to the wall.
The final project used 15 mirror squares, which would require four of the IKEA packs, totaling $51.96 before tax. Along with the paint and supplies, this DIY project comes way under budget for a similar mirror look.
Or try Target
If you're looking to fill a larger space, Lenora, who goes by modellenoraramsey on TikTok, has a DIY hack that uses mirrors from Target. She shows a project using six mirrors that cost $7 each. They're lightweight but have a durable, simple black frame. She shows her parents stacking two rows of three mirrors on the wall and securing them with a nail gun. This creates a customized look for less than that creates a stylish feature in the two-floor entryway.
You'll want to start by installing the middle mirror, using a level to ensure it's straight before securing it to the wall with a nail gun. The central mirror will act as a guide for the mirrors on either side as well as above. While Lenora used six mirrors to create this look, you can add more for even more impact. These rectangular mirrors are ideal if you want to emphasize the height of a ceiling as the long lines draw the eyes up. With this method, you also don't need to paint beforehand since the mirrors already have frames.
