Ceiling Makeover Ideas That Really Bring The Drama

There are plenty of ways to create a dramatic look in your favorite room. For instance, you can opt for vibrant paint colors and luxurious decorations with dark blue walls and chartreuse throw pillows. Adding bold materials to your bathroom or kitchen, like shimmering gold hardware and dark marble countertops, may have the same effect. However, another way to create a sensational design is by doing something unexpected, and one of the most daring things you can do is install a unique feature on your ceiling.

Because almost every ceiling is painted white and often ignored, making this a focal point can leave visitors in awe of your design. This choice will also cause guests to look upwards, making a short ceiling or small room feel much more spacious. On the other hand, it can also do the opposite and create a cozier feel. If you're not convinced that adding an extravagant element to your ceiling can alter a space, check out the following transformations.

Before: Basic white

Before the makeover, this vaulted ceiling was plain and white with a modern-looking fan. Let's see how the homeowner drew attention to the fifth wall.

After: Statement green

They painted the ceiling a bold green shade, drawing the eye toward the white center beam and fan. If you don't love the color, you can employ this effect using any bold color you desire.

Before: Plain and cramped

Just like the first room, this ceiling is just a plain white shade. Because the ceiling and the walls are all the same color, the room looks closed in and small.

After: Extra dramatic with wallpaper

To add some dramatic flare and to differentiate between the ceiling and the walls, this homeowner applied a loud wallpaper on the ceiling and began painting the walls green. Once the makeover is complete, this room will be a unique jungle escape.

Before: Warm tone

This warm-toned beige ceiling didn't match the aesthetic a DIYer was going for. As you can see, they're about to cover it with light blue paint — but with a twist.

After: Cloud mural

To add extra flare, they painted the ceiling blue, then covered it with hand-painted white clouds. The result? A gorgeous mural that brings the outdoors inside. A design like this is excellent for a child's room or any creative space, such as a home art studio.

Before: Glamorous dining room

While this glamorous dining room isn't lacking in style or decorative pieces, it could benefit from an interesting feature above the chandelier.

After: Completed look with metal tiles

Homeowners installed metal tiles on the previously unadorned ceiling, which created a luxurious look that does the rest of the room justice.

Before: Slanted ceiling

If your home has a slanted ceiling, you may wonder what to do with it. As you can see in the above image, this homeowner is getting ready to transform the space into something grand.

After: Wooden beams

Placing wooden beams along a slanted surface makes it appear more purposeful and adds a rustic layer of warmth.

Before: White paneling on porch

Another place you could update the ceiling is in a covered outdoor area like a porch. While there's nothing wrong with this white paneling, the owner wanted a warmer appearance.

After: Warm wood planks

To achieve the desired look, they installed warm wood planks. To contrast the adjacent wall, they also switched the orientation, so the planks point toward the yard.

Before: Traditional light fixtures

This homeowner wanted to change their ceiling from a traditional look to a more modern one, fit for cozy movie nights.

After: Tray ceiling with light show

To accomplish this, they built a tray ceiling and installed color-changing lights along the inside, which adds an extra unique feature.

Before: Starting the transformation

As you can see, these renovators have already begun their makeover by installing wooden planks. They also plan to replace the small overhead light with something more useful.

After: Coffered look with beadboard

They created a coffered look to transform the fifth wall and included beadboard between the panels. They also replaced the overhead light with a small ceiling fan.

Before: Old fashioned light in warm room

Because this homeowner wanted a modern appearance with a statement ceiling, the current look didn't fit their aesthetic. As such, the stained glass light and warm-toned walls needed to go.

After: Modern black and white

To create a modern look, they painted the walls a pure white and chose a dark black shade to make the ceiling stand out. Bringing the black paint slightly down the white walls makes the contrasting tones appear more cohesive.

Before: Popcorn ceiling

There are several reasons why getting rid of a popcorn ceiling is a good idea, including the appearance, dirty surface, and safety concerns. You can either remove or cover this material — let's see how these homeowners choose to proceed.

After: Covered in white shiplap

Because removing popcorn ceilings can be difficult and dirty, these DIYers decided to cover up the texture with white shiplap. They'll just need to cover or paint the wooden beam to finish this look.
