Home Town's Erin And Ben Napier On How A Bit Of New Paint Can Transform The Outside Of A Home

Erin and Ben Napier, the husband-and-wife duo behind the popular HGTV show "Home Town Takeover," definitely know how to transform communities in a significant way. The couple has completely revitalized quaint villages in the south, from their hometown of Laurel, Mississippi, to Wetumpka, Alabama, just outside Montgomery.

"Erin and I have renovated more than 80 homes in Laurel for "Home Town," and we've seen how these improvements change a community for the better. Now, with help from HGTV, we're going to continue what we started and help more small towns across the country," said Ben Napier in a press release, via People.

One way the Napiers recommend renewing your own home is by painting its exterior. It makes sense that you'd want to discover how your house's aesthetic can transform significantly with a fresh paint job. However, Erin and Ben's ideas on revitalizing your home may not be what you think!

Painting this part of your house can make a huge difference

According to Realtor.com, in an episode called "A Solid Foundation," the Napiers worked on a stately home in Laurel, Mississippi. The homeowner's charming property was built in 1929 and needed a slew of renovations to the tune of $70,000.

After completing massive projects on the home, which included fixing the decaying subfloors and wobbly walls, Erin stated, "I'm just wondering if fresh paint is the only thing it needs?" The couple decided to completely transform the exterior by painting the home's trim a beautiful neutral shade of sage, along with the elaborate door. Additionally, the couple got rid of the black shutters for an easy update. It goes to show that just painting the trim can maximize a home's curbside appeal. Keeping the palette neutral ensures your home will be attractive to buyers when you decide to sell, too.

Tips for painting your home's exterior

When painting your home's exterior, Erin Napier tells her 1.3 million followers on Instagram to "never skip swatching!" That's right; the designer says it's essential to check out how the paint color actually looks when the sun hits it. So even if you like the color while looking at it in the home improvement store, it could look totally different in natural light.

Furthermore, during another redesign of a home during Season 6, titled "Grandmillennial," Erin and Ben suggest keeping the home's exterior neutral so that it looks more modern, explains Realtor.com. The couple opts to incorporate a pop of color by painting the door a gorgeous light blue hue. Besides painting the trim, the scalloped accents were removed at the door's entrance to transform the design further, making it look much more modern. So if you plan to paint your home's exterior, consider neutral tones while focusing on the trim.
