The Space-Saving Desk Design That's Going Viral On Facebook

Having a dedicated workspace in your home is a great convenience. Whether you work from home, are a student, or just enjoy having a clean surface for creative projects, a desk will come in handy. Just be sure to keep it tidy, because a clean desk is reported to increase productivity by as much as 84%, according to Quality Logo Products.

Not only are desks functionally important, but they can also complement the design aesthetic within your home. Of course, decorations displayed on the top of your desk help in that area, but a good quality, well-constructed desk can add a lot of depth and interest to your living room, bedroom, or home office, on its own. Since not everyone has room for an elaborate desk set up, there are plenty of fold-out, wall-mounted desks available. However, few of them offer the pizazz you may be looking for. For anyone in that boat, a uniquely designed space-saving fold-out desk has recently gone viral on Facebook.

Facebook user Kady Brown uploaded a short video showcasing a unique, wall-mounted fold-out desk with a waterfall style, wood slat design (via Facebook). In just over a week the video garnered 26.1 million views and a plethora of comments praising the desk's striking design.

The desk is called the Flow Wall Desk, and is the creation of award-winning, Netherlands-based furniture designer Robert van Embricqs. Each desk is handmade by van Embricqs and costs more than $2,800.00. While this is definitely steep, building each desk to order can take the designer anywhere from 10 to 12 weeks. The Flow Wall Desk is designed to fold flat against the wall as eye-catching décor when not in use, and then unfold to transform into an equally beautiful workspace that is both aesthetically appealing and functional. The desk's description notes that van Embriqcs was motivated to design the workspace as more people decided to work from home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Units are made of oak wood with brass hardware, and come with a 2-year warranty.

This outstanding piece of functional artwork is far from the only wall-mounted desk out there. If the price tag is too steep for you, there are lots of affordable floating desks that are just as practical for saving space. Many of them are affordable, stylish, and trendy as well.

Depending on how much surface space you need versus how much floor space you need to save, there's a range of choices. Amazon offers a narrow option that does not fold into the wall. It comes in black for $95 and white for $100, and has one shelf beneath the desktop and another above, as well as side shelves for additional storage. Another option from Amazon is a floating desk with a drop leaf that is a bit more economical in both price and size. It functions as a fold-out shelf for any purpose — a desk, laundry storage, kitchen workspace, and so on. This one comes in both black and white, both of which cost $40. Seen pictured above, Target sells a larger wall-mounted desk with shelving and a fold-out desk complete with a leg to keep it secure. It's around $120 for either a white or espresso brown finish.
