How Home Town Stars Ben And Erin Napier Made A Bedroom By The Front Door More Private

A first-floor bedroom means not only easier access to midnight snacks, but a safer environment for those with special needs. According to Sunwood Home Builders and Remodelers, those with certain disabilities or injuries will appreciate the easy access to their bed and the ability to avoid using the staircase on a nightly basis. This is also true for aging adults who prefer quick and safe entry to common spaces, such as the laundry room, living room, and garage.

However, a bedroom on the first floor can become a nightmare if placed right by the front door. Immediately, you'll feel as though you have no privacy when friends and family are constantly passing by your sleeping quarters. Luckily, co-hosts of HGTV's "Home Town," Erin and Ben Napier, have found a stylish solution. This talented duo is known for renovating historic homes and returning them to their true glory. Thus, we trust them to guide you in introducing elegant seclusion to your bedroom — even if it's right beside your home's entryway.

Hidden in plain sight

While working together to renovate a home built in 1906, Erin and Ben Napier decided to turn a space downstairs into the main bedroom, per Realtor. But it quickly turned into a privacy concern when they revealed the bedroom would be situated by the front door — so they quickly came up with a solution to avoid any awkward intrusions; a secret entrance! They did this by covering the wall and door with paneling painted in a beautiful blue shade. So, if you're someone who isn't aware of this unique feature, you'll most likely walk right past it.

"When you walk into a house, it should be intuitive which direction a guest is supposed to walk," Erin Napier noted. "They shouldn't feel like 'I don't know where I'm supposed to go.' This is helping them figure out 'This is the direction I'm supposed to go.'"

In a humorous twist, the homeowners forgot about the Napiers' plan and asked where the bedroom door was. Amused, the Napiers revealed which part of the wall pushed open, leading them into their elegant bedroom (via Discovery Plus). This hidden door feature makes the property feel like a historic home filled with mysterious secrets.
