One Nearly $2 Million New York Home Is Perfectly Fit For A Hobbit

Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's mythical and magical works like "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy will love this new home listing in Jefferson, New York. The over 170-acre property is listed through Zillow for just under $2 million and has all the charm and appeal of The Shire.

Located in New York's picturesque Catskill Mountains, this is the first time this whole property has ever been on sale. There are various buildings on the vast amount of land, including a farmhouse and dairy barn, both original to the property, plus a studio building and main cottage. This mountain property is the perfect retreat for an artist to escape to, converting one of the many buildings into a studio or for anyone needing a mountain getaway. Aside from the gorgeous, whimsical cottage, the surrounding land is also breathtaking, the former farmlands containing multiple forests, streams, meadows, ponds, and other beautiful scenic views.

Inside the whimsical cottage

The main studio cottage is inspired by Norman medieval architecture stylistics, according to the Zillow listing. Arising in England and France in the 11th and 12th centuries, Norman architecture is similar to both Gothic and Romanesque architecture, involving raised and vaulted ceilings, rounded shapes, large decorative columns, etc. (via Britannica).

The outside of this 3,000-square-foot cottage certainly has early French architectural influences, with the dramatically steepled roof, Quoined corner accents, and more. It also bears a striking resemblance to the Hobbit holes of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy world of The Shire — especially on the inside. The ceilings are vaulted, creating more headspace, but the actual first floor is very low — perfectly sized for a Hobbit. The interior has a rustic, unpolished — but quaint — finish, with a hand-sculpted fireplace and exposed beams.

There are also some incredible accents, like the intricately carved columns and owl details on the edge of the staircase. The main door resembles a Hobbit hole, both wide and round, much like the circular doors found in Middle Earth's cottages. If that's not fantastical enough, the house opens out into a lush meadow overlooking a pond.

More of the magical home

This gorgeous mountain property caught the intention of the much-loved Instagram real estate account Zillow Gone Wild. The post only shows off the main cottage in question, and it has quickly gained a lot of love from the page's followers. The whimsical appeal of the place is not lost on anyone, with most of the comments praising the home's fairytale qualities.

Lots of commenters have pointed out the cottage's paralleled design to Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves," with one commenter pointing out the similarities in the wood owl carvings on the stairs. Others have a more sinister, witchy take on the cottage, another commenter saying it's "perfect for cooking the neighborhood children." Almost all the commenters agree that the cottage has some magical, mythical charm, though. "Property includes a stream, ponds, a bog, an ogre, a donkey," one commenter jokes, and quite a few more making reference to both "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." This New York property is sure to make a perfect home for an equally unique owner.
