Upcycle Old Easter Eggs & Baskets Into A Charming Hummingbird Birdbath

You might have hummingbirds, and you might have a bird bath, but do you have hummingbirds in the bird bath? Chances are, you're missing out on the enjoyment of watching these tiny birds splash and bathe. Because they're rarely spotted near the big bird bath, many people might assume that hummingbirds don't care about their hygiene, but they actually love water, and are especially fond of running, rippling water fountains. Unfortunately, a lack of accessible water could be why your hummingbird-friendly flower garden isn't working. Large bird baths are usually too deep for them to use and lack good edges for them to perch on. You could hunt for special hummingbird baths online, or you could save your coin and have fun by creating your own! YouTuber Robbie and Gary Gardening Easy show exactly how to transform old Easter supplies into a cute and colorful bubbling birdbath (via YouTube). With an Easter bucket, a plate, and a solar-powered fountain kit, you can turn a plastic Easter egg into the perfect splashy hummingbird perch.

Whether you opt to repurpose your old Easter clutter or pick up a few on-sale items at your local dollar store, this DIY project is an easy garden task that's sure to bring more colorful hummingbirds to your yard. Do this craft in the spring and you'll have a charming fountain just in time for hummingbird migrations — and what could be cuter than a hummingbird splashing around in a little Easter eggshell?

A half-shell egg makes the perfect birdie bubbler

To make this garden craft, you'll need a bucket-style Easter basket, a straw, a plastic plate, and a plastic Easter egg. You'll also need a solar-powered fountain kit, like this one from Amazon for $11.99, and two tools: a soldering iron and a hot glue gun. In a well-ventilated area, pull your plastic egg apart and use the soldering iron to melt a straw-sized hole in either half of the egg. Insert the straw into the hole you've created and apply hot glue to seal it in. In the center of your plastic plate, solder another straw-sized hole and surround it with several small holes for drainage. To put it all together, place the pump inside your Easter bucket, slide the straw through the plate and attach to the water pump nozzle. Adjust the plate on top of the bucket until everything sits straight. When sunlight hits the solar panel, water should bubble up over the edges of the egg cup!

While this is one of the simplest DIY hummingbird water fountains that will keep them clean and hydrated, it might require some troubleshooting. If the pressure of the pump shakes the egg cup, you can shorten the straw or add a few marbles to the egg to stabilize it. Place the solar panel in partial shade or apply painters tape to a portion of the panel if you need to lessen its power. Adding stones to the plate below can also create a safe drinking spot for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators! Scatter a few more fountains around to make your yard an irresistible hummingbird oasis.
